This light up is for Carl who passed away this week. He was known to his incredibly large number of friends as Smurf. He was my employer and best mate for over 20 years. Many years ago he gifted me my first pressure lamp, a Tilley x246 guardsman in very good condition and the rest is history in that department. Randomly chosen to represent the light he brought to many people's lives we have, Aida express 1350 Optimus 200 Tilley PL53 Ditmar 506 Alladin 1A Carl is represented by the Smurf blue steel box. Still here in memory and inspiration.
@James K I feel your grief, I lost my best friend and camping/Tilley buddy in 2011. Lighting a lamp in honour and memory is a fitting tribute, you have done Smorg proud! Jeremy
In the above pics the PL53 is not so bright, this was due to running at low pressure as the mantle developed a huge hole after lighting and I did not want to scorch the Hendon globe. Shortly after the pics were taken the generator crapped out engulfing the mantle in yellow flame and turned the remains of mantle black in seconds. About right I thought for a light up in the name of goodbye. Today I deployed Henry's top tip of dropping the generator on its head twice on to a hard flat surface from a height of about 4 inches. It has been running for about half an hour now, happy as Larry and nice bright white light. Great success!
