I discovered that my meths bottle is getting a little low, so I checked on the toolstation Web site where I bought the last one, seems that inflation has struck again. So I looked around and found that I can get 5 ltrs for £22.49 on Amazon (delivery charges apply if you don't have prime) not tried it yet but I hope it's OK. Just wondered if anyone knows a better source? SupaDec Methylated Spirit 5L https://amzn.eu/d/cyYN1FB
I get my Methylated spirit from Yorkshire Trader at £5 ltr. Ebay is doing paraffin/kerosene at £37 and cheaper for 20ltr free delivery. I found it under Heating oil . It burns perfectly well in my Bialaddin and Petromax.
That's pretty similar pricing but with the advantage that you can buy smaller amounts. I'll look in next time I'm passing By the way I tried the stuff from Amazon this afternoon its fine, my bowl fire uses quite a bit to fire up.
@rayw, @Tez, @Fireexit1, @Scott D I get my 5 litre from here: Barrettine 5 Ltr Methylated Spirits | Wow Camping Apols just noticed out of stock but may be worth contacting to see if they will re stock at same price soon.
I don't bother with Meths any more. This does the job and I can get it from just around the corner. La Hacienda Bio-ethanol fuel, 2L | DIY at B&Q
I see that the “La Hacienda” bio-ethanol is >/= 95% ethanol. It has a bitterant added. What is the ethanol content of what you Brits are calling “meths”? Edit: I see Bartoline is only 90% or more ethanol and Barrantine between 75 and 95% ethanol. I’d be sticking with the “La Hacienda”. Cheers Tony
If you fancy a chuckle, have a look for Barretine meths on Amazon, the feedback used to be hilarious! I buy it by the gallon from a local supplier, I'll ask to see what it is these days. Alec.
Yes I read some of those. One thing I've noticed is the price for 5ltrs is now £20.99 https://amzn.eu/d/8HRMBvz
Here we go chaps. I'll be trying g that bioethanol at some point but the 10l of Meths for £28.95 plus postage is back in stock if anyone's interested Barrettine 5 Ltr Methylated Spirits Twin Pack - Wow Camping Bloody good deal tbf!!!
For those new to this game, methanol is not the same as what the British call "meths" and the Australians call "metho" (methylated spirits). Meths (and metho) are principally ethanol, with denaturants or bitterants added (in Australia metho is ethanol with bitterant added to stop it being drunk). Methanol has different properties to ethanol (eg boiling point, flame colour), and is more toxic in general use. In Australia, methanol is usually found in chemical laboratories and industry, whereas metho (ethanol) is available through retail outlets. The terms "meths" and "metho" are derived from when the most common denaturant used to stop commercial/industrial ethanol being consumed was methanol (10%). In Australia, methanol can no longer be used as a denaturant in methylated spirits. Cheers Tony
Our fuel prices in hardware stores have been increasing every time I look. Seems no more discount days. Methylated Spirits of 20 litres costs Australian $102 (about £59). Luckily I have stocked up well, so right for some time. Shellite is a different matter and when I win Lotto I might buy a few litres more.
I tried some Bio Ethanol in my Bialaddin 315 today ... great success and the lamp fired up as per normal .. great stuff .. 8 quid for 2 litres at B + Q ..UK great find..
Thakfully i am still able to buy 20 litres of Shellite here in Queensland for 92 dollars, but for how long in our present Anti-fossil fuel lunacy
@Alby whoooaaaa there.... £8 for 2 x litres, b and q, versus £6.80 for meths, wow camping, delivered to your door? Ahem, I'll take the purple stuff chap. The bioethanol will get a try when my present 8 or so meths litres is used up.
