Hi, I know a lot of you have Aladdins and other non pressure items so I thought I would ask a question. Is it still possible to find original period correct shades (glass or paper) for a UK made Aladdin 12?
Hi Stuart, That looks to be working well There are lots of glass shades on ebay .. you will need a tripod type holder but they are about too The fabric ones do come up as well if you want the exact one for the model you have then I’m sure other members will help out with sizes, I’m afraid mine are not to hand hope you get sorted regards pb
This will give you some ideas. http://www.aladdinlamps.info/PriceLists/1939_UK_cat.pdf And this. Aladdin Lamp Shades
@podbros @Anthony Thanks for the replies. Ideally I’d like a shade the same age as the base to maintain originality (if that’s the right word in this case) as much as possible. But as with many of our lamps and heaters it’s not totally original as I had to replace the chimney and fit a new mantle.
The font is one of the last used with the model 12, so it should be from the start of the 1930s. IIRC, the 12 finished in the UK around 1933. I would expect that it would originally have been offered with a glass shade. If possible, find some advertising from that era.
Thanks @Nils Stephenson . Spurred on by the links Anthony provided above I went looking for more info and it seems the original glass shade was a 601 and the paper shades were either 15” or 14” depending on the period of manufacture. It seems you can buy a modern version of the 601 from Aladdin in the US but no surprise that the cost plus shipping would be a little pricey.
I wonder which of the 10" tripods would have been used on this model. Was it the older under burner tripod or had they already introduced the gallery mounted tripod at this time? Anyone have an idea?
Aladdin model 12 lamp - parts listing side 6 offered both collar and gallery fitting tripods. Bear in mind this is a USA publicatoin and variations between US, UK and other countries exist. Good news for @stuartc as the gallery mounted ones are the same for the model 23 and easily available - in brass or nickel - AKA silcrom. The only paper shade I have encountered is to be found here: Aladdin lamp & heater Spares, along with the tripods. The shade is I believe what came with the lightweight aluminium and black stem model 23 of the 60's, but it looks very similar to the one in the earlier parts catalogue above. It sits on the same tripod. If using a glass shade I have taken to buying 4mm ID clear silicone tube and slipping a short bit over the tripod ends, this stops the metal tripod chipping away at the glass shade. As to originality of glass shades - unless patterned difficult to tell old from modern. I would get one that you like for now and wait to see what turns up
@Fireexit1 Thanks for the info. I picked up a NOS gallery mounted tripod a few days ago in preparation for a shade turning up some day. I’m not sure of the age of the tripod relative to the lamp but as you said sometimes you have to go with what you can get. Good idea with the silicone tubing as well.
