Hi, does anybody have any instructions for the LD1. The reason I ask is that I am not totally sure of the fuel used. The one I have works perfectly on paraffin. Should this be paraffin? Also it needs pre-heating the same as a normal Tilley. Produces a perfect burner flame on Paraffin.

    Hi Yano and Welcome !

that is interesting, perhaps other members would know?

@Anthony got one of these going and used a Tilley pre heat so perhaps they do use paraffin ?
Great you got yours working
    Have you got any photos??

    Regards

@podbros , LD1 uses kerosene, the LD2 uses methylated spirit.
This post is for an LD1 so kerosene.

Hi Anthony, Thank you for the positive reply and the information regarding the LD1 fuel. Paraffin it is. Good to see that I was working in the correct direction.
Although I have had the lamp burning, I would now like to try it as a detector. Do you know any simple source of Methyl Chloride for testing please? If I can get a test done, then I will upload pictures.

There are other choices than Methyl Chloride.

    Hi Anthony,
Thank you for the attached data sheet, regarding test colours on different products. Very interesting. I will now try and find a suitable product locally for a test run.

    Hi Anthony,
Please find pictures below of the LD1. 2nd picture just burning, third picture detecting Ethyl Chloride. Difficult to see the vivid blue on the picture. However you can see better colour reflected on to the air intake tube.
    Regards.

Thanks for posting the results @Yano.
I have had a few leak detectors going but never been lucky enough/unlucky enough to test a detector.

Was your test Ethyl Chloride or Ethyl Bromide?

The chart I posted above says you should have got an intense green.

The decal is of interest too.

Hi Anthony, It is Ethyl Chloride B.P. In the picture it tends to look more blue. However in normal viewing it is a very intense Green /blue.
Test lamp responds very quickly to the test.
The decals are home made. A copy from the damaged original. What I did was make a water slide transfer the correct size. I then masked off the size of the transfer on the tank and sprayed with metalic gold spray. Then applied the transfer and finished with clear laquer.

    @Yano
The pictures are very nice and congratulations on getting it running. Just a query on the decal. It looks like the patent on your decal is 572703. I note the correct patent number appears to be 577703 as per the Operations Guide for the LD2 mentioned in another post by @Anthony. I am presuming only one patent exists for the LD1 and LD2 though.

Indeed. GB572703 is a totally different patent.
I assume this decal is a replication where someone has mistaken a bit worn out text from an original one. A '7' can in some cases be mistaken for a '2'.
In anthony's post here, you can see that it is 577703, but it's not totally clear.
A more worn out decal could perhaps fool the one making a reproduction.

Hi all, Yes, I think it should have been a 7 and not a 2. Another grey moment. I will need to produce a 7 for it.

Did have it running at the Historic Lighting Club meeting today. A lot of interest shown.
