I picked up this Anchor 999 in very poor condition and missing a few parts. Following a good clean and a few parts purchased from Base Camp it holds pressure and fired right up with a nice bright even light. base-camp.co.uk
Going well ! - I have one of these and I have to say it serves well. I think the big let-down on these is the plating but the earlier ones seem substantial enough to go on for ever as long as they don't get left in the damp.
look good. One thing though: the pointer on the hand wheel should point down. It shows the position of the needle. Some people change this and say that it shows the flow of fuel but sideways is not common at all and will destroy needle and jet.
Thank you for the comment. So the only way to adjust the brightness is by adjusting the pump pressure? I had a bit of a failure, after I turned the lamp off and cooled down the globe broke so now I need to find a replacement here in Australia. I am hoping that a common globe from some other lantern will fit. The broken one is 11mm outside diameter and 12mm high.
Hello, In design you can not adjust the light output: its is 150, 250, 350 or 500cp according to the type. Did the globe fit well ? Small changes in dimension can make the globe to tight. It should "rattle" a little.
Base camp offer a replacement globe for these part no GL1V - but out of stock and postage will be pricy to Oz. They also have the genuine chinese ones but warn they break easily. As there are a few of these lanterns in Oz I expect you will find one. The "go to" place in Oz seems to be T W Sands sandsman@ozemail.com.au (Huntingdale VIC)
The globe was a little loose so I thought that it would be OK. Strangely it cracked as it cooled down.
Well as they say: shit happens. Not all globes are the same quality. Even a small scratch can be the cause of a crack. On the other hand, as long as the globe is still in shape you can use it. Make sure there is or are no faults causing small (invisible) flames that heat up a local spot.
It's cleaned up nicely, congratulations If the lantern is too bright you can replace the nipple with one with a smaller jet hole (adjust the air gap accordingly) .
@Koala - BCF shops may have a Companion globe 110 m/m dia. x 115 H which may suit. About $18. Check that you get a clear one, not frosted. There is a reference list of globe sizes on this site somewhere. Coleman 214 and 282 globes are also a close size. Had the same thing happen to my Solex lantern; it cracked as it cooled down, damaged by a small hole in the mantle, and thus ruined the original, etched globe. Taught me a hard lesson, to check mantles regularly and shut down immediately a hole is seen.
When I started collecting about 5 years ago, you could pick these up for very little money as no-one really wanted them. I've got a few 909s (300cp) and 950s (500cp) and I have to say they really belt out the light plus I've found them to be very reliable... just dont let them get damp as the plating can be very thin.
Thank you all for the replies with advice. I fitted a Coleman 214 glass which is the correct outside diameter but shorter (11cm) than the original (12cm). I made a spacer to lift the globe and it works well if not pretty. I will continue to look for a longer globe.
