I have a few mantles that I want to use, but they don't have anything to tie them with. What can I use? Is there a special name for the string so I can buy some. Thanks I will be interested in knowing what members use. Regards Brian.
@Buggerlugs I use cotton yarn that my wife sews into them. It lasts just as well as the original thread. You can also use a thin copper wire. Tom
Thank you all for the choices. I appreciate your input. I was hoping that we could buy the string and it had a proper name, something like high temperature silica fibreglass sewing thread perhaps. The reason why I wanted to know was because I have plenty of mantles without tying strings.
Thinking laterally, any fibre based string will break down due to the heat, so I suspect any cotton or thread would work. I'd try thick cotton thread and see how it goes.
@Buggerlugs I use waxed cotton thread. It’s useful because the waxed thread doesn’t slip when tying the knot. And it’s strong. Cheers Tony
I use stainless wire they use for tying fishing flies. Very fine gauge I put in a hypodermic needle and thread it round the mantle top Cheers pete
I've learned some useful new techniques in this thread, thanks guys and thanks @Buggerlugs for bringing it up.
Me too. Thanks for all the contributions, I ended up using some copper 0.8mm wire. Lucky for me my wife well you might say is happy to help out with the threading of the mantles. You might even go so far as to say this instead. Here is a photo of what I use. Thanks.
It really doesn't matter much what you use. The string in a mantle is only there to hold it until the mantle is burned in. Once the mantle has been lit it is just a collection of ash and the string isn't holding anything.
