I have a few mantles that I want to use, but they don't have anything to tie them with.
    What can I use?
Is there a special name for the string so I can buy some.
Thanks I will be interested in knowing what members use.
    Regards
    Brian.

I use cotton yarn that my wife sews into them.
It lasts just as well as the original thread.
You can also use a thin copper wire.

I have used both of the above with success and have also used fuse wire

Same as @Sellig33 , the tie from a freezer bag works well.

I have had success with fairly thick fuse wire.

Thank you all for the choices. I appreciate your input.
I was hoping that we could buy the string and it had a proper name, something like high temperature silica fibreglass sewing thread perhaps.
The reason why I wanted to know was because I have plenty of mantles without tying strings.

Thinking laterally, any fibre based string will break down due to the heat, so I suspect any cotton or thread would work. I'd try thick cotton thread and see how it goes.

I use waxed cotton thread. It’s useful because the waxed thread doesn’t slip when tying the knot. And it’s strong.

    Cheers

I use stainless wire they use for tying fishing flies. Very fine gauge I put in a hypodermic needle and thread it round the mantle top
    Cheers pete

Me too. Thanks for all the contributions, I ended up using some copper 0.8mm wire.
Lucky for me my wife well you might say is happy to help out with the threading of the mantles.:^o
You might even go so far as to say this instead.:rage:
Here is a photo of what I use.

It really doesn't matter much what you use. The string in a mantle is only there to hold it until the mantle is burned in. Once the mantle has been lit it is just a collection of ash and the string isn't holding anything.

This has been so helpful, even to explaining where the string goes when all is burned in.
    Thank you.
