They are going well James

    were the vapourisers/generators ok?

ive read that Coleman ones fit but don’t always work as well as the originals?

was the only difference in model no. the fact that one had a built in pricker and one didn’t ? They must be early then?

    regards,
    pb

I was lucky in that both these lamps have primus 1051 type generators with the tip cleaner and both ran fine without any attention.
You are correct in that the only difference between the 1050 and the 1051 is the 1051 generator has a tip cleaner.
Finding a 1050 with its original generator is like finding a unicorn and if you did you would change it just like anyone who used these lamps did. Having to switch off the lamp, dismantle and manually unblock the jet each time it clogs is something you would get bored of if there was another way.
I have never tried but I believe a Coleman R55 generator fits these lamps.
Date wise the brown topped 1050 is stamped V for 1931 and the blue topped 1051 is stamped AB for 1937.
The 1051 is three years to new to have ever had a blue hood, it should be green but as it had been painted by a previous owner and needed enameling anyway I decided to have some fun with it.

    Thanks James
Yes it confirmed what I though about the generators and apparently there wasn’t much price difference but maybe I got that mixed up
I think I saw a lantern that had a sliding tube that allowed for ‘slightly’ easier access but still
It does feel like you have gained a bit when you don’t have to wrestle with vapourisers

Phoar!! What a couple of spankers

I hope they are in the Gallery??

    thanks again
    Cheers

This is the second time I have seen a 1050 stamped V with that configuration. All evidence has otherwise indicated that that configuration didn't start until 1933. I have seen a few 1050s from 1932 that are the older configuration with the internal pump and no quick starter. Another mystery that will probably never be solved.

Btw, what have you used to spray the cages and handles? What mantles do you use?

I am sure I have seen another 'V' stamped brown topped 1050 for sale in the UK, but I have no evidence to prove that.
Jeremy @X246A has one and I have two, all UK finds.
My second one has a blunt control spindle and a blockage that may or may not be the former tip of the control spindle.

I used alloy wheel paint for the cage on the 1051 and engine paint for the cage on the 1050 with exhaust paint on the control wheels. I think that the 1050 would have looked better if I had used the wheel paint.

    The mantels are luxor 200/300cp

Some pics including the as found pics which have just been found

Thanks for the replies. Interesting to note that several V marked 1050s have turned up in the UK. Are they all identical configuration with brown tops? Is your second brown topped one also from 1931?

You should put these in the reference gallery.

My second brown top 1050 is also date stamped "V" for 1931
Neither of mine have a pressure gauge boss fitted to the tank like Jeremy's one does, but are otherwise as far as i can see they are all identical.

Very interesting. As you can see, my 1050 from 1932 is the older design.
