I just got this 320. The previous owner stripped all the paint off of it. I don't know if the he was going to paint it or polish it. I'd like to repaint it. While researching in the gallery, I find only two colors, white, and silver. Are these the only color they came in or are there others? Also, what would be the correct type of paint to use? Any help and suggestions for color(any color) would be appreciated, thanks.

Silver tank and a red hood is the usual combination..

Thank you Jeff. Out of the 2 colors, I was leaning towards the silver. I was just wondering if there were any other colors to choose from and still keep it as close to original as possible. This is only my second European lantern. The first is a Tilley X246 that I haven't got running yet.

A silver tank will look good and if the aluminium cage/frame is cleaned and polished that will also look good, the red hood appears to be in fine condition, happy fettling.
What period of Tilley X-246 lantern do you have?

I really don't remember. It's been packed away for awhile. I've been trying to move for the last 2 yrs. I believe it's a later model. X246B

The frames are made of a zinc alloy, possibly mazak, and they don't polish well at all! The originals were painted silver and I've done the same on the 320s and 315s I fettled back to life.

The 320 and 315 are two of my favourite Willis and Bates lanterns, and work very well.

Oh... don't forget to spray both the pump nob and cap and also the filler cap as this was how they came out of the factory.... unless someone knows different?

Yes I found that did my frame with brake calliper paint, its not a wonderful finish but it is reasonably heat proof

One thing which you may already know but I neglected to mention, it's a good idea to clean the brass and then use a coat of etch primer first, it gives a good base for the paint, brass is not the easiest metal to paint.

Oh I don't know. I used pink polishing soap on this one, trust me, it's shinier than it looks in the images.

I was in the middle of writing a post explaining how I was going to paint it. The wife (Bug) says "What are you writing?" I tell her and she says she wants me to polish it..... I guess I'll polish it and if I don't like it, I can always paint it. I should have just asked her first. Thanks for the replies. Off to the market to get some Mother's mag polish. How do you guys feel about putting a coat of clear coat on it after polishing?

I think the finish of your lamp is a matter for you to choose.
I have changed some of mine but I know its only paint (or laquer) and could be changed in the future. Something I do is leave the base which cannot be seen original so that a future owner could see and use it to restore it. I always think the nice thing is to preserve these old lamps for future generations

@ColinG from memory, I used a 50mm loose-leaf mop on my home made bench polisher to apply the polishing compound. Even with a machine, it took a while.

The previous owner stripped the bottom too. So I don't know the yr this was made or the original color.

That's a shame, particularly as they destroyed the date coce.
