These are back with a certain UK Ebay seller who was previously a useful source. Now approaching twice the price of the old stock. Needs deep pockets.
I think the price will come down a bit more in the UK. Base camp has them on for £27. Still a bit pricy. Maybe I will wait for the January sales
Interesting. The 1 off price I saw was ~£42. Reduces a bit for ordering qty. Too much anyway. Been thinking on a run up to Peterborough. Of course nothing to do with Basecamp's neighbours The Oakham Brewery. It always seemed that would make a good afternoon out...
979908NRA Thorium free Loxon mantle for models 12, Super Aladdin, A-C, 21 & 23. Back in Stock ! £26.95 And a visit to a brewery always has its attractions
Thanks, yes just paid a visit to the website to see that. Given the US prices posted earlier that was roughly what I was expecting as the UK price. It will be interesting to compare the quality with what went before. As others have said it wasn't unusual to find the mantle skirt had separated from the carrier on those.
I think that the separation happens to them all once in use. It does not seem to affect the light output, but as you move the lamp and remove the mantle and gallery to light it it does get progressively more damaged by being bounced about.
I suppose it’s a different scenario to a pressure lamp mantle? The hot gases aren’t contained in the same way so a tear near the base isn’t as critical? What about a pencil sized hole? Say about halfway up??
I have never had a small hole in the side happen. But I suspect it might not be ideal and the glass chimney is pretty fragile. The mantles seem to be quite happy rattling about but then probably as a result of a knock, they drop off. It has happened to me when putting the gallery on, my fault being too heavy handed and the others have happened when I was not about or using them. I suspect when being moved by people dusting but marital harmony prevents me from passing futher comment.
haha same thing here I suspect. That was the reason for sticking them back down using plaster of Paris as I mentioned up thread.
Some months on and these seem to be available again. At £40 each or £100 for 3 on the average! US still $24.95 Has anyone ever had any success at converting them to some other mantle type? I see only failed attempts just like my own efforts.
Has anyone any update on these? I wonder if any of the new ones have been tried yet? Looking around the prices still seem high compared to before. Basecamp looks like the best choice in the UK at the moment. I have just spotted an ugly split in my mantle just under the hanging ring. I don't think it's long for this world and there is only one spare in the cupboard.
I was fortunate enuogh to find some in a local hardware store and "do a deal". Ebay still silly money and others still no stock. It seems that the price went up due to a shortage and have yet to come back down. Base camp or John Moncreif are the only ones under £30 I have seen recently.
Investigating why my mantle suddenly split around the top support I discovered that the dob of Plaster of Paris which secures the hanging wire to the frame has come off. So that meant it was free to swing at the slightest movement. That is what cracked the mantle. I mixed up some new Plaster of Paris to secure it all again. It works but I doubt it will last long.
