hello all I found this Sunflame lamp in France. She need to be cleaned but i should like to know more about it. she was made by Sunflame appliance LTD, Ridgerfield N.J USA A number is stamped n° 0003 on the instruction plate with the text in english and spanish the sticker on the fount is in too poor condition to be read. all the top of the lamp looks like a 242/246 Coleman except for the color Any idea of the year production and type ?
Thank you for the papers, Neil I don't see very much the difference between 103 and 104 model, do you ?
No they are identical except 104 is kero and 103 gasoline. The 104 has an alcohol cup of course but possibly there is a difference in the fuel feed system. I am not sure because I don't think I have ever worked on either model. The instruction plate should tell you though. These lamps typically have lighting instructions on the plate so instructions for gasoline will make it a 103. ::Neil::
hello all, the little Sunflame lamp has regained colors. I'm really surprised by the many similarities between this lamp and Coleman 242/246. Except for the tank, nearly everything is copied on the Coleman. Do you think there was a connection between these two trade brands?
It looks very smart! Coleman had a research and development department for decades and they tended to lead the field in America, so many American lamps etc., are similar to Coleman's products, Jeff.
Michel: Very nice job on the Sun Flame. The main difference in the upper part of lantern with the Coleman 242 series is the generator. Hopefully, your lantern didn't have the stress cracks that the AGMs of this period are noted for. Paul
No stress cracks ? I thought not while painting But this morning, I have tried to light the lamp and i noticed a little leak in the fount, I'll be obliged to proceed in a époxy's application before a lighting test
It can be tough to tell the AGM SunFlame from the later licensed SunFlame. If this is an AGM SunFlame, it's from the early 1940s. AGM was branding their stuff as AGM after th war and Kamplite by 1950. I'd need to see the badge on the collar to know for sure. It sure looks great after the restoration.
Hi Michel Lovely restoration job 8) & welcome to the "Sunflame" club yours is a smashing example now it's had a good seeing too Stu
hello all and thank you for the compliments. AGM ; here is the badge on the collar the glass is marqued only "Sunflame, made in USA " with the logo thanks for helping
OK, Sun Flame, Albert Lea, Minn. marked tends to be pre-war. 1939-1942. Looks more and more like this New Jersey offshoot is post war, but short lived, 1945-1950. Maybe not that even long. Also a good there was war year production. Even though companies often re-tooled for the war effort, products that were deemed useful in war or survival conditions often continued to be made. That would account for the seeming marriage of parts. More to be discovered about this brand for sure!
Hello I think you are right while checking the documents I have, i realise that Neil sent me some Sunflame adverts from ... august and november 1947. many thanks Michel
Goodnight. I also have a Sun Flame lantern (model 103) and am trying to restore it. The cover is missing. I believe it is possible to use some of coleman. Does anyone know if this is possible and which model? I also plan to replace the generator. Is there any from Coleman that is compatible? Grateful. Note The Sun Flame brand decal on my tank is almost perfect. If anyone needs the image for reproduction, I can send photos. Thank you very much.
Hope you find the bits for it and have it looking as nice as Michel’s lamp. I really like it, possibly because it does look like a Coleman.
Grateful. As the lantern belonged to my grandfather, who was very fond of camping and fishing, I am not going to restore the paint on the tank. every “scratch” in the paint must have had a story. like a scar on the skin of an explorer (or a scout leader like me). Will the Coleman Model 242/246 fuel cap and generator fit on the 103 Sun Flame? tks.
Good on you - that's something quite a few folk just don't seem to understand. The lantern looks perfectly fine as it is - it's 'honest'. Far better that way than some over-restored or polished to buggery trinket fit only as a decoration on the mantlepiece...
Looks very nice and hope you were able to get it running again. I would assume a Coleman fuel cap would work on this lantern but the generator would be a bigger challenge since the base is so much wider than the top of the generator.
Hi guys, It´s me again, I got this for share. I´m traying to copy this in file, but if someone needs more informatión, I'm at your service.
Hi guys, Me again, someone could give a clue how I can reassembly the tube of the needle, it seems it has asbestos on the tip, someone has a way to do it.
