    Pork Pie Tilley TL106 long

In this old thread, I was given a Tilley TL-106 with a pork pie base. I later learned that it was from one of the west coast light houses only I never found out which one - either the Ardnamurchan (the closest to my physical location), or Eigg which is still relatively nearby... or possibly Cape Wrath at a pinch. Anyway, back then I was told there might be some others in another box that I could have, supposedly from the same source but I never heard anything so I assumed theyd been dumped. But... apparently they do exist and might be coming my way! I have no details as yet but I'll post back if or when I hear more.

As a reminder, this is what I was given last time...

Oh, and the reason I was given the 106 was because its not legal for charity organizations to sell dangerous goods which includes paraffin lanterns and stoves unless they're new and unused. I was given a Dualit toaster (by the same place) for the same reason which is mad, not that I'm complaining!

I had the same issue with the disosal of a small leather sofa - old enough to not contain any plastics/foam but as it didn't have a fire safety certificate on it they would not take it. I did point out that the reason for fire safety certificates was due the use of plastics and foam but no. I "recycled" the leather and burnt the rest !

I also like to obtain lamps etc., which have been used locally as the personal history is good to know.

You’re lucky Colin, I have been contacted a couple of times by a local charity shop when they’ve had a Tilley lamp handed in. Never been offered them for free mind and always felt I’d paid more than I would have at a car boot for instance. Oh well, the money did go to charity!

So, I was finally able to pick up the 'hurricane lamp' I'd been promised. As I thought, it was an old box that has seen better days with various bits of junk in. Before I brought it home, I thought I could see a table lamp base but I didn't want to delve too deep and thanked her forvthinking of me. (This is the same person who have me the TL-136 with the pork pie base with a beautiful cream glass shade.) Apparently this wasn't from the old lighthouse as I first thought but was rescued from a derelict Victorian mansion somewhere on the West Coast (of Scotland). There are loads of f them around here and many of them are falling to pieces because of the bad winter weather and a lack of funds to keep them going.

    Anyway, here's what I got...

    IMG20230425191425.jpg

    IMG20230425191412.jpg

A TL-136 again but not the pork pie. Kind of expected and a nice find if the rest was there.

    IMG20230425191458.jpg

    IMG20230425191532.jpg

Two vaporisers with control valves and a funnel.

    IMG20230425191617.jpg

    Nice clean box!

    IMG20230425191626.jpg

'Its easy to see. It's a Tilley!'

    IMG20230425191635.jpg

    IMG20230425191643.jpg

A wrapped up hammer thing but decided to look at that later.

    IMG20230425191708.jpg

    IMG20230425191804.jpg

    IMG20230425191815.jpg

A torch bottle and a cracked globe... only it wasn't, which was a miracle! Just abit of horse hair by the looks.

    IMG20230425191908.jpg

    IMG20230425191925.jpg

    Mantles... always handy!

    IMG20230425191950.jpg

    IMG20230425192140.jpg

    And a spare globe!?

    IMG20230425192229.jpg

Not bad! A TL-136 with a few spares... and a hammer, because, who knows!?

    IMG20230425192246.jpg

    IMG20230425192453.jpg

    IMG20230425192507.jpg

    IMG20230425192521.jpg

Hmmm, it's still got its rock solid washer.

    IMG20230425192621.jpg

So it looks like I've got a TL-136 with two vaporises, just so long as they fit.

    IMG20230425192712.jpg

Here's what it looks like put it together. I think I've done it correctly.

    IMG20230425193036.jpg

    IMG20230425193057.jpg

    IMG20230425193110.jpg

    IMG20230425193230.jpg

    IMG20230425193331.jpg

    IMG20230425193437.jpg

    IMG20230425193416.jpg

    IMG20230425193519.jpg

    IMG20230425193529.jpg

Something happened to the tank at some point and one of the burners is the modern type but overall its a pretty lantern. A double burner TL-136 i presume but I haven't looked in the Reference Gallery yet.

So... not quite what I was expecting but a very pretty twin lamp and from somewhere round here apparently!

I'm not going to rush this as I need to see what the deal is with the tank first, but I'll definitely get this working just as soon as I've sorted out a Veritas P9955 with an unsalvageable damaged tank, but more of that later.

A useful haul. I like the twin arms, you just need a spare PL55 tank to screw them into.

It looks like it may need some solder around the pump boss.

Well Colin, that’s quite a find and I could quite see it gracing the dining table in an old Scottish mansion. Perhaps you should light it up for Charlie’s coronation,

So, what are we looking at here? Is it a butchered twin head hanging lamp?
@Jean J. Bet you want it!

    That's quite a find... a double headed 136 --> a piece of workshop history.

    Cheers

Hello Stevie, in my opinion, the answer is no, those are two goose necks from two pre 1940 Tilley wall lamps, which have been soldered into a T shaped adaptor, the adaptor is well made and it's shape is similar to the riser tubes on some PL 53 & PL 55 lanterns except that it's longer, in fact, it looks about the same length as the riser tube on a Tilley vase lamp.

    @ColinG
That’s a top haul there. I’m liking the double headed configuration, it looks quite elegant. My Dad used to tell me, just after the war, they had a double headed Tilley on the dinning room table. As a child I do remember pressure lamps in the home but I don’t particularly remember a double lamp on the table, to me then it was just a lamp.
Dad called all pressure lamps “Tilley’s”, as a generic name, so your example has now got me to thinking about Dad’s table lamp.
    Enjoy
    Pete

I need to get the thing working first!!!

I was hoping to get my hands on it at the beginning of April but had to wait. The filler looks to have a crack round the rim, possibly something to do with the lump of solder - he it holds!

Well presented Colin, and this lantern is one hell of a good find that's for sure.

I do hope you will be able to get her up and running soon.

@BigStevie are you suggesting that I like to acquire rare or unusual lamps?

Interesting lamp Colin.. a table lamp chandelier!
Tilley did solder/lead repair dents then paint over them.. seen quite a few now.. perhaps the previous owner stripped with the idea of polishing and that was as far as it got?
Hope you can get it working

I really need to start working on it but I've been so preoccupied with my Veritas P9955... the one that isn't!

Thank goodness this was easier to get working than the Veritas! All I had to do was replace three washers, fit one new pump leather and she was ready for a test. I used Butterfly mant look es in case there was something wrong but after pre-heating and around 60 pumps, she just worked!

    IMG20230509205244.jpg

    IMG20230509205506.jpg

Once I was happy that it was burning properly I fitted the shades.

    IMG20230509210404.jpg

But I had to put it where I guess it was always supposed to be - on a dining table in the Highlands, and doesn't she look beautiful!

Now I need to dust it off a bit and decide how far to restore the finish.

I'm a happy bunny now I can tell you!

Thanks Jean, I'm pretty pleased with it myself!

The mountain you can see through the kitchen window is Ghuibhsachain on the shores of Loch Shiel. It's one of the most striking mountains in Lochaber and quite a challenge to climb (apparently!) but no-one ever does, they all head for Ben Nevis instead.

The twin-neck has been going for about an hour so far and it's steady as a rock.

    It certainly draws the eyes..
I would be tempted to make it pretty as it is a creation not a standard model. Still marvellous tho in any state
