Here’s the lantern that I’m considering re-nickeling, a complete but slightly leprous 1082-S. It doesn’t sport the cheerful blue vent that 1082-S’s are all reputed to have, so who knows — maybe that was switched out long before it came into my possession.

I got this from a fellow in Jordan who basically wrapped it in Saran Wrap and chucked it into a box for the long haul from the Middle East to the USA. Predictably, it arrived crushed, and the vent was almost flat. Much careful metal bending later, I think it looks okay.

Mechanically speacking, I had to do all the usual things to get it going, but nothing extraordinary (such as fabricating new parts).

The most interesting bit though was resurrecting the manometer, which remained stubbornly planted at zero psi no matter how much pressure I added. I took it apart and (fortunately I used to do watch repair) simply lubricated the various bearing points of the manometer mechanism with some watch-oil. Reassembled and works like a charm now, as you perhaps may see. I suppose it’s natural that without proper lubrication for 70 years the linkages and so forth would get a bit stiff. I know I’m not nearly that old and I’m stiff every morning when I try to get out of bed.

With the fettle done, I fired her up. Good night, she’s a baller. 450 cp AT LEAST, and only at a little more than half of maximum recommended pressure. (Beyond that there seems to be no additonal benefit, so why stress the old gal out?) I am here to tell you that you could more easily stare at the sun than at this bad girl in full flight. She is now driving a Coleman 1111 mantle and I swear she wants to blow it to cinders. This lantern is so powerful — yet quiet! — that she almost seems angry about something. I can’t figure that part out.

So now I’m wondering whether to re-nickel it or not. I must say I really like the design and most definitely the performance. Good grief, it’s like a supernova.

    Enjoy,

    Ulf.

A nice find with an interesting history. As you guessed, the top has been replaced and also the pump. Probably from something Asian.

As for re-doing the nickel, that is entirely up to you. I would probably leave it, but it's a toss up.

You can find new rivets for the label on Amazon or the like as you will need to take the label off when cleaning or nickeling.

    Hi Nils

Very interesting about the pump. It’s quite a nice one, too. The variegated Bakelite looks like something from an old radio.

I have other lanterns that probably could benefit more from re-nickeling … I might leave this one alone.

I think it looks just fine.... I wouldn’t be re nickelling it.... but hey, either way it’s a survivor! Thanks for posting, interesting lamp.

Hi BigStevie ... I don't think I'll re-nickel this one. I have some really ratty ones that would be better to experiment upon ...

Thanks for your advice and kind word.

    Ulf.
