Hi, This is a 1938 (AC) primus 981 lantern heading for Shetland. This lantern is from the launch year of this Primus model. I had to do some fettling to get it in proper condition but I got another 1938 Primus 981 lantern for spares, Turned out pretty well and I hope to see this lantern shed its light to the North Sea. Jeff, please send me your address! /Conny
Hello Conny, it looks great! My address is on it's way to you. I live in the northwest of the Shetland mainland so all going well, that lantern shall light up the Atlantic Ocean, but if I travel to the east coast of Shetland, then hopefully it will light up the North Sea. Or I could travel a few miles down the road to Mavis Grind and hopefully light both of them at the same time. The link below shows information about Mavis Grind, in the photo the North sea is on the left and the Atlantic Ocean is on the right, click on the photo to enlarge it, Jeff. Mavis Grind - Wikipedia Here is an old postcard of Mavis Grind before the road was widened.
Just as well you posted the link, Jeff - I was thinking what a big lassie that Mavis Grind must be... Anyway, what a cracking lantern that is and I'm quite envious, although it obviously wouldn't work down here in GL - no foreign lantern ever does...
Nice condition on that one! As long as everything is working as it was intended, that's one of the most pleasant lanterns Primus made. It's so damn silent! I must say that your quick-starter doesn't look to well, though. It's mainly yellow flames on your second picture. No big loss, though. You still have the spirit cup, and that's always a more calm way to preheat your lanterns. A functional quickstarter is a nice feature on real users, though.
Christer, You are right about the quick-starter performance. The one to blame is me not the lantern as this was my first try ever with a quick-starter. A couple of seconds later with additional pump strokes the unit performed exellent. The lamp is still lighting up my back yard. /Conny
Christer – you were right as always (d**n you ). When I lighted the 981 once more the yellow flames occurred again during pre heating, so obviously something was wrong. The other 981 quick starter had a leak, but I managed to get a functional unit combining the two. I think the quick starter works well now. Jeff – the lantern is on its way! /Conny
Looking good Conny! You got me inspired. I think I have to get started with a 1081 that just has been tossed in a corner of a storage room for many years now. (Same kind of quick-starter.)
This fine lantern arrived safely today! The build quality is excellent and it's bright, it's also a very quiet lantern. The first two photos show it lit and the third photo shows why I did not go down to the beach with it, because it's pouring down here!
Looking good Jeff. Congratulations. But I'm surprised a nice little drizzle would stop you from entering the beach. I never reflected over this before, but how many Swedish lamps/lanterns do you have?
Hello Christer, yes, it's an excellent compact lantern and I suppose that I could wear my oil skins and rubber boots and venture forth to the beach I only have 2 Swedish lanterns in my collection, but one of my cobbled together lanterns includes Swedish parts, as does one of my cobbled together table lamps. I used to have several other Swedish lanterns, but I traded those with other collectors, Jeff.
Excellent work Conny. T'would be difficult to part with, but glad to know it's going to an appreciative home. Jeff--it appears the green grass ends at your garden gate. Well kept garden. Bud
Hello Bud, thanks, but my garden is not as well kept this year as it normaly is. That's because it's hardly ever been weather to be in it, if you look closely at that photo, you will see that the tennis court at the back is flooded! It's difficult to raise gardens here, because of the wind and the salt spray, but us local gardeners struggle on, Jeff.
Nice line up Jeff, but I do think that Tilley CL would look better in my collection Best regards Matt.
Hello Matt, they are not in abundance but they are around, I know of several collectors who have an example.
These 2 photos show the lamp which I shall be posting to Conny in exchange for the Primus 981 lantern. It's a 1930's Tilley TL-10, but it's fitted with a GF control cock, Jeff.
Hello one and all, it's taken a while for this lamp to get to Sweden, because of the hassle which was caused by the Royal Mail. Conny now has his lamp and I'm sure that he will post some photos of it through time. Thanks are due to Neil for his help , without which, that lamp would still not have reached Sweden. The link below shows my post about the hassle with the Royal Mail, Jeff. Warning about posting lamps abroad!
Hi, yes I received the Tilley TL 10 tank from Jeff via Neil this week, thanks both of you . I haven’t assembled the lamp yet and I’m awaiting a shade for it, but once I got it fired up I will certainly post a couple of images of it on CPL. This will be a special lamp for me, my first Tilley table lamp (and what a nice example) and it will also bear the memories of the hardship of getting it to Sweden. I will come back soon. /Conny
Jeff, the TL10 has found a new home now, and I believe it is comfortable with the new company. I will come back later with it lit, but I was clumsy cracking the 182 glass when trying to clean it up. I’m sorry for the funny image angle, but I hade to kneel outside the door to my shed for getting a shot. /Conny
Hello Conny, it is in fine company and it appears to be the only British lamp there! I had a glass break last night, so that's 2 of us, how many collectors will join us I wonder, Jeff.
Indeed. But seriously Conny! Only one measly Swedish lamp!? Oh, well. Atleast it is a good old carbide one.
Christer - well spotted! Yes it is the K.F.E. Mf. AB, Eskilstuna model 65 carbide lamp, in the ceiling shelf far corner. Jeff - not entirely lonely; in the opposite shelf there is a UK Welsbach 3008 lamp. /Conny
