I've just spent a few weeks prospecting for gold in the Aussie outback up near the top end of Australia. my base camp was a canvas tent and for lighting at night I used a 50 year old Tilley that performed flawlessly. two years ago I nearly threw it away as it was in poor condition after years of constant use, but after a careful fettle, thanks to tips on this forum, it came up looking surprisingly good complete with an as new second hand hood and seal kit. below is the outlook from my tent awing. home for five weeks. note the anthills everywhere
yes, I should have mentioned, found a few ounces of gold the largest nugget being over 15 grams with many over one gram using Minelabs GPX600 and a GPZ7000 detectors. up early every day and knocked off after lunch time as it became a bit too hot for digging holes. was with two mates and we all did well. and with all the sweat, blood, toil even though one of us is a chef who cooked some amazing meals, lost 3 kilos weight and felt as fit as a fiddle at the end of it.
Tilley's are so basic and simple to work on I reckon they're perfect for the bush. Isn't it great to see them doing what they were meant to after so long! I don't reckon many LED lamps will be working after 50 years!
A lovely campsite, really out in the lonely places. Good on the gold finding and the Tilley is doing well.
