The lantern does not burn the fuel well, smell comes out and the chimney is sooted. It has a 200 nozzle installed, is the correct one? Any other thing to take care? thank you so much.
Welcome o this forum. Maybe you can tell us what you have done? From the fuel you use till, lighting ? Pictures also tell a story so don't hesitate to post them. But: you say 350cp and a 200cp (250) nozzle is mounted. Don't you think there is a mismatch ? A 350cp model needs a 350cp needle, jet, ceramic burner (nozzle) as well as mantle.
Ok, so change the nozzle and needle and make sure they fit well. Check and adjust the air cap between the jet and air intake and do a rapid check (does it work) and check (cold) if the fuel spray is straight out of the (350cp) jet.

Welcome to the forum @Leonardo Collares Looks like you've got Petromax 828 that could possibly been made in the late 1950s. Does it have any numbers at the bottom of the fount/tank baseplate? The jet('nozzle') orifice or hole for this 350cp lantern should be 0.2mm in diameter and the cleaning needle would be 0.19mm diametre. If the cleaning needle of your Petromax is around 0.19mm, then the 200cp jet's orifice would have been already enlarged to just about the right size. In addition to all the advice already given, you also need to make sure that the jet is not slightly leaking at the threaded areas. That will also make the burn too rich and sooty.
Im sorry, It don know how to respose each one The fuel used is kerosene I cant see any number in the bottom of the tank I think is posible that the 200 mark in the nozzle means 200 microns, then the nozzle could be the correct. Thank you all, I will keep you informed with the advances, best regards
@Leonardo Collares The traces of soot indicate that the rapid preheater is not working properly.You will not be able to avoid completely disassembling the Lamp into its component parts and cleaning it in citric acid bath.The best thing to do is print out the detailed instructions that @Henry Plews sent you and work through them step by step ab.You must order a complète gasket set and a 350cp jet and needle from Petromax. According to my observation,this carrying frame was used by Petromax from mid -1956 to mid-1958.The inner cleading #117 with central mixing tube attachement was no longer used by Petromax from 1954.It comes from an older Petromax or from another brand. The tank scratches for age determination are offen very difficult to find and require a great deal of expériance. 200 HK means 200 Hefner candles.
I guess that you have to change the jet and needle to solve the main problem. You have a 350cp lantern !

Reinhard, I dont understand what you mean, I do what I can do before start paying for things, here is difficult and expensive to buy spare parts. May be the solution it was only the cleaning, I dont know, but I try to share my experience, Im sorry if you dont like it, best regards
The px will operate at any air gap between 14 and 18 mm. Is the jet worn out, rather approach 18 mm gap for correct gas mix. Either a 200cp jet combined with 200cp needle was mounted. Such 200cp jet will not work satisfactory in 350cp lantern. As mixing tube and nozzle are too large. Or the 200cp jet was worn out and is rather 350cp size. Reinhard and Wim are correct. Seems you fixed somthing by accident. Not really knowing what exactly was the cause for malfunction. Thus you won't be able to find correct measure on other malfunctioning lantern. But be happy. Your lantern work. This might be sufficiently satisfying. Congrats to this lantern.
Congratulations for getting the problem solved on the Petromax, Leonardo. Perhaps what you described in rectifying the problem did not appear very clear to the readers here. What Reinhard, bp4willi and WinVe mentioned earlier were all logical about the normal workings of the lantern. An increased air gap shouldn't be causing a rich, sooty burn but rather, thins it out with more air. It appears to us that you might have solved the problem accidentally or probably, a lucky shot. It will be great to anyone reading this, if you can provide more details about the corrective steps that got it burning right. Good luck with the Bialaddin.
Thank you bp4willi and MYN, surely I overlook importants things but never with bad intentions, only for ignorance. Reviewing all the proces I find something that may be important First I dismantle and clean the carburetor. Because I find a needle in my father desk I change it because the old one apears to be very worn and crooked. I cant see any marquings in the needle so I suposed were equal. Here I supouse could happen what MYN said first time, looking the photo, not in direct sight I can see the second needle is thicker than the first one. when I put the needle in the nozzle I find some resistence but I think it was because the dirt. Probably I was rectifying the nozzle to a bigger measure. Then I mount the carburetor, I corrected the mixing tube (it had a crooked mouth) and the (famous) distance. Then I mount a 300-400 cp mantle and everything works fine. Best regards, Leonardo
That may be. But the black soot on the vapurizer can only have been caused by a poorly functioning rapid preheater.And If the vapurizer is not well preheated,the kerosene smokes and stinks.
The two grooves on the thinner needle indicate a 200 CP size. The older 300 CP needles have three grooves. Unfortunately, this marking no longer exists on the newer needles, but the thicker needle looks more like 500 CP to me. You could verify this by measuring the wire gauge. For the different dimensions you could look at this table. Please note that the differences in jet & needle sizes are quite important, and only a small enlargement will already cause the lantern burn rich.
Also, by cleaning out the carburetor(if you mean the Preston loop vaporizer), you might have cleared a lot of insulative carbon that has built up over prolonged use by previous owners. Too much carbon build-up inside the vaporizer can also cause poor preheating of the fuel. That would lead to some liquid kerosene being ejected from the nozzle(jet) orifice instead of kerosene vapour. The resulting flame would certainly be yellow and sooty if this was the case. As mentioned, do take note that a very slight increase in the jet/nozzle orifice(hole) from the nominal 0.2mm to say...0.25mm, 0.26mm or anything higher will cause too much fuel being released into the mixing chamber and burner. The result will also be yellow, sooty flames. Nevertheless, a 350cp lantern can also tolerate an increase in the said dimensions up to those of a 500cp lantern, provided that you make corresponding adjusments to the air gap as well.
There is a mark behind the gap between the nozzle and the mixing tube that apears caused for some malfunction, maybe can guide you I have another lamp, an Optimus that have this piece completly holed. This Optimus lamp after some time creates a spot of coal on the mantle
The marking in the first picture must have been caused by fuel escaping from a completely worn jet. Re picture two: Hot combustion air is sucked into the mixing tube through the hole,which very quickly leads to the mixing tube glowing with all the consequences.
There should not be any burn or shoot marks in the "air chamber". It means the jet, new or old, doesn't fit correctly on the vaporiser.
