The filler cap on my Nagel Chase tank had a very rusty ball bearing that was completely corroded in position. I managed to get it out after much soaking and ultrasonic cleaning but now I need to replace it

Does anyone know the correct diameter ball bearing as I'll have to buy some. Is there a special grade or will a standard variety work?

    Hi ColinG
Do you have any old Coleman check valves you could cannibalise for the ball bearing that's in those ?

Coleman and AGM generally used 1/8" steel balls but a 3mm or 3.5mm will work OK. Just needs to be a suitable dia to fit the socket and be held by the stake over. Probably best to use a stainless bearing and they are available and cheap enough on the web. Somewhere buried in my parts I did have a range of balls of varying diameters. For future reference changing out old damaged balls is maybe a 10 minutes job with a drift to bang the old ball through the stakes then a quick clean of the socket, new ball inserted and re-stake. I have long since lost count of the number I have done. Most air stems have a 1/16in hole although a very few are slightly smaller and may need drilling out to 1/16in to enable a 1/16 drift to pass. ::Neil::

A Coleman pressure valve has the same thread as the NC., valve does, so if you have a spare Coleman valve you could just fit it.

I have both. The NC had a badly corroded ball bearing but the Coleman has been chewed up on the outside, looks like someone tried to tighten it with a hammer!

So, I'm going to swap the ball over to the NC and that should work. Fingers crossed!

I successfully took the ball bearing from a defunct Coleman filler cap/NRV and fitted it to the NC original.

Now it needs to be tested.
