A work in progress, commissioning after a period of neglect in storage, but with only a bail and ball nut missing (replacement for the latter is a Coleman item).

Rust removed and filler cap, cap screw, retaining chain, pump tube cap and base plate nickel plated, consistent with their original finish. Bail made from 4mm stainless steel rod.

The stubby generator is reminiscent of a Coleman 520 or 530 stove generator (top in the photo).

Fuel pickup has a control valve operated metering needle, but the pickup tube isn’t constructed with concentric tubes and an air bleed as the Coleman equivalent is.

The fuel tank appears to be sound, with none if the AGM tendency to stress cracks. A final assembly and light-up is to follow.

Fuelled up (Aspen) and lit. Opening the control valve a fraction, and not the 1/2 turn the instruction on the collar tag gave, resulted in a minimum of flaring until the generator was hot enough.

Inevitably, because of the lack of Coleman ‘instant-light’ sophistication, start-up of the AGM is more tricky, with moderate flaring.

Not for that reason, but to see how the lantern performed with paraffin as the fuel, I made a priming cup. There’s a lot of metal in the generator and burner, so I gave it plenty of capacity and ‘spread’. As you can see, I again made use of my cache of spent cartridge casings.

Fuelling with paraffin was unsuccessful and I reverted to Aspen alkylate petrol in these video clips.
