One of these things is not like the other......

And this is how the other two posts are fixed to the hood ring...

    WhatsApp Image 2023-10-03 at 11.27.54.jpeg

So any suggestions on how to make this NOT like this ?

It looks like the posts are riveted .... could I silver solder it together, or would that make the cage undismantle-able ( not sure if thats a word )

Can these brass rivet posts be got ?

    Hi @Paul Burnell
Yes the tilleyman has them and his are the ones with screws so much easier to fit.
Might be best to ring him first as I believe he is moving ?
    Hope that helps?
Or you can drill and tap what you have already and fit a tiny screw

I've drilled tiny holes and tapped into the ends of the rods and used small screws to fix the ring in place. This has the advantage of making it possible to disassemble the whole thing.

Prior to about 1950 the frame rods were turned down at the ends and riveted over, after that they were drilled and tapped for 5BA screws. So you have maybe three options, depending on what facilities you have: get a piece of brass rod, turn tenons and rivet it in, copying the original, find a later screwed frame rod and replace it or drill and tap the original rod to make your own screwed rod. On balance I (personally) would go for the first option- apart from anything else it's going to be a pig to drill and tap the rod without cutting it out so you might as well just remake it to original spec.

    Thanks steerpike,
    I love the background info.

Unfortunately I don't have a lathe, although I'd love the space to have one and then not get it but build a bigger bench instead.

I looked on Base-camp but they only have the table light size, which has to be cut down to fit the 300x which kinda defeats the purpose of buying the rod with the screws in it. I'm still undecided which way to go on this. In the meantime I bought a cafetiere and will try and cut it down to size to replace the glass.....it is the correct diameter. I've been reading post on how to do it on here.

I managed tp drill and tap the rods without a lathe (although I recently bought myself one). It's a little bit fiddly but perfectly possible.

Anyone know what could have caused this scoring on the bottom of this 300x.....could it possibly be caused by some type of floor stand or maybe a wall bracket....

It's very central and deeply scored,...looks like from repeatedly placing it on something.

That been said, the fettle is coming along nicely. ( for a first fettle ). Thanks for the idea Fireexit1

Awaiting a glass and a preheater wick from Base-camp...

I wonder if it could be a line where the solder was flowed around the base plate when it was sealed. Perhaps the solder takes the paint differently and it scraped off?

Yes - I have the same - and halfway up the bottom rim on the sides. The rest is probably "fair wear and tear"

Did a fairy liquid and water spray test, and all seem to be holding pressure now.... after a few replacement seals of course. [-o<

Yeah Podbros, it worked a treat.... and the coffee pot only cost
    6 euro ... sweet.

I still have the proper one enroute... e30.... so the added cost of the enamel cover would have just been p 20231008_191911.jpg rohibitive so I made the cover myself from a small stainless steel pot.

Hey guys, I'm now fettling a guardsman. This coffee pot hack worked out a treat, even though I purchased an original online from the the UK. Anyone ever see a similar hack on CPL for the guardsman ?

The Tilley glass globe is a lot harder to copy using a donor of some sort. Maybe if you can find a similar diameter laboratory flask you might be able to cut it down but then you'd have to cut a hole on the bottom. It's undoubtedly doable but it would be hellishly tricky and prone to failure at multiple points. That said, I'd love to see someone attempt it!

@ColinG Hey Colin, it was your advice that gave me the Cafetiere solution, which not only worked a treat, but also gave me the conversation piece when showing the lamp. I'm sure I could eventually pick up a donor tilley glass in a car boot sale or charity shop, but wheres the fun in that. And as you can see from the pics above I just love the functionality of the mod.

As it turned out, I liked this mod so much that I didn't bother replacing it with the purchased glass, which arrived shortly after this. The new glass now resides in my spares box.

Since I struck gold with this little nugget of advice I just thought I would reach out and see if anyone else had tried something similar to the cafetiere for Tilley's ..... I will now scour the flea markets and boot sales for laboratory flasks.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

    Paul

Some folks have used a type of dremel tool for making lighting holes in a glass so in theory it may be possible to make the bottom hole that way?
As Colin said, whether the glass would be up to the job after being modified is also another variable but as you said above there is great satisfaction in finding a new way to do something?
    Anyone can buy one

Which two 'puppies'? Those mounted on the truck?
Did you net in those as well?
    For the questions:-
    1. Unburnt mantles, double-tie.
    2. Yes, in Korea.
    3. Can't answer. Too deep, too subjective and it is different for everyone.

By the way, it looks like you've got good advice and having great progress on the lantern.
