I had a great day out at the Ashover FOL yesterday. Met up with some ‘stovies’ and ‘lampies’, spent a lot of time with John @presscall which is always pleasant and informative. Camped overnight after a great evening of displays. Here are some pictures
Though I’ve been going to Newark (lamps and stoves) for umpteen years, it was my first time here … I got there on Thursday afternoon and spent the next morning setting up my display for the Friday evening … … and when night fell An eclectic blend of lamps and stoves, but getting the housekeeping right of morning toast … … plenty of hot water and cooking handled by my Canadian Coleman Easi-Lite stove. … and my Origo ‘Heat Pal’ meths heater My speculum-plated Guardsman tank was gleaming in the sunshine, so much so that I could see myself in it. The Saturday night in particular was magical. ‘Blackpool in miniature’ said the banner on the entrance gate. Look, I live not thirty miles from Blackpool and the Illuminations are fine, but eclipsed by the diverse entertainments and sources of light at Ashover … Paraffin lamps certainly Steamers Meteor (Merlin derivative) V12 aero engine in a Hurricane mock-up fuselage An Austin 7 (with lampshade) A loop-the-loop Exhibitors like myself were kept busy answering the visiting public’s questions. Of my collection, it was the carbide lamps that attracted most attention … … and THIS Lilor butane lantern Some fettling too … well, dismantling the Veritas bowl fire I acquired on site to explore what might need fixing - a replacement pricker wire - more of that in a future fettling post. The festival was over, most people have gone, final stages of packing. John
