Here’s a rather dumb question, but I just don’t know where else to turn—and seriously, one of them has to go. Which of these fine X246B’s would you rid yourself of if you only wanted to have a single one? Assume that the physical/cosmetic and functional condition of each is essentially perfect.
They'd probably need each other until you've decided. While they are not exactly rare(for now), you'd never know... If you really intend sell just one of them, well... the only option is to let customer decide on that.
That’s interesting. I actually considered presenting them in such a way that the buyer could pick which of the two to take, while making it clear that only one of them can be sold. Maybe that’s what I’ll end up doing… I know the X246B doesn’t garner much respect from lantern enthusiasts, but I have to say that these seem to work every bit as well as the best Guardsmen I have used. They’re just more delicate and require a bit more care when using and handling.
Thanks, Jeff! The one on the right represents my first encounter with a Happy Mantle. It was hard to make the decision to actually use it given how hard they are to come by, but I thought the lantern was worthy. So far I do believe it’s the nicest light I’ve seen from an X246B.
Thanks for your opinion! I’m kind of leaning towards that one, maybe just because it’s very hard to come across one of those frames in mint condition. The newer lantern’s hood looks better, though. There’s a chip of the enamel missing from the top of the older one. I never noticed until the other day that there are subtle differences in the shape of the hoods. They’re unfortunately not interchangeable unless one doesn’t mind grinding a bit of paint off the edges of a newer hood in an older frame.
@Jaska I would keep them both. I would especially keep the cage with the three bars as the chrome at the bottom looks a wee bit shinier and I like to see the globe with the 171 on opposed to the EEC. This is just my opinion.They both look great.
Probably several more than I need . I’ve sold a substantial number of them but at the moment I’ve still got 5 Tilleys (2 Guardsmen, 2 X246B’s, and an unlit/unused X246A), a Hipólito, and then some incomplete parts stuff. A Coleman is on the way and I’ll likely pick up a 500 CP Petromax or clone thereof in the coming days.
@Jaska Maybe similar. You have some older looking tilley's. My oldest tilley is the 1959 guardsman.. I do like chrome lamps. I use to own a tilley TL14 in 1976 It was in beautiful condition but being younger and foolish it got passed on.
Sounds like you don't have enough lamps to me. As they say each to their own enjoy your collection mate.
As it turns out, I now have two lamps fewer than I did when I created this thread. The X246B on the left in t(e picture along with one of my Guardsmen have been sold and are making their way to a new home on the morrow . The only thing you can take with you when you go is your character, so it’s best not to get attached to possessions. That’s how I see it. Thank you to all who shared an opinion here, as it made a tough decision easier.
