Good afternoon to you all. A friend of my has a Hipolito Pressure lamp H501. He had trouble to let burn the lamp good. So I went there and what I think it was the problem was warming up time. The lamp did not lit up good after 2 cups of spirit fuel. When the third cup was almost empty the sock did lit up and gave a very good white light. I pumped up the pressure and all went well. After 10 min ( pressure was still ok and so) the lamp started to burn with flames around the sock. Just like that out of nowhere.. Can somebody give a reason why that can happen cause I do not know for this moment what can be wrong. Thank you in advance.
No the pricker did nothing. Thing is this lamp burned perfect. But my friend bought it from me and lit it the first time and almost burned the place down because of trying to lit too soon so it was pure kerosine all over with big flames. After that I went there and lit the lamp in teh proper way. Only then after a half hour or so the lamp started to do this...and did this also today..so hidden carbon or dirt will be the problem like you said..a deep clean will be needed.
Maybe the wrong fuel, or the pressure dropped due to an air leak somewhere. But the picture says a rich mixture or a clogged vaporizer.
2The opening is 14 mm like it should be . The rare is that it burns good and after 10 min this starting to happen...really strange
Strange.. The mantle looks a little small but it could be the photo When it did it the first time was the glass in place? Sorry , don’t know what to suggest apart from the fuel being wrong or old as folk have already said perhaps a good strip and clean? I can’t do any harm and surely will help? Perhaps you will find something amiss Good luck with everything, regards, pb
How full is the tank? To much fuel will make the pressure drop huge at the start. Does the needle work at all?
The needle does work yes. The pressure in the tank is ok. When this flame started I pumped more pressure but that did not do anything. The jet is tight enough..Its like I said after about 10 min of good burning this starts..I said to my friend this evening to start and clean all again. I have to go to the hospital tomorrow so I will ot be there..I look at this lamp in the weekend and take all your words with me and try to figure out what is going on.
There are times even a tightened jet can leak by the threads, there isn't any real way to fix it besides maybe some copper antiseize. Newer production jets are the worst when it comes to sealing.
That mantle is far too small for your lantern, what happens is it wont keep the vapouriser hot enough for good vapourisation, a larger mantle will keep the vap hotter and so will the glass being kept in place to keep the temperature up. Also if you have slightly worn jet increasing the air gap will compensate for an over rich mixture. I had this problem with an optimus 1550 and what I did above cured the problem. A lot of the cheap mantles on sale do shrink up far too small for these large lanterns, the ones I use are the base camp specials. I want use any other ones now. I hope this helps Regards Ian
Problem is solved. The jet was indeed not tight enough. The tank was too full. There was contamination in the curve also. The mantle is not a cheap one or so..It is a Petromax original mantle. He used a CP 250...too small I guess. Now a 350 is installed. Also Petromax. The lamp works very well now . Thank you all ..we learned again that even tiny things can make a lot of things going on.
It's good to hear it's now working well now, hipolitos are a good quality lantern, I've owned one of mine nearly 40 years and it still works as good as the day I bought it. Best regards ,Ian.
I may be wrong but the 501 is a 500cp lantern so it should be able to use a 500cp mantle. What is an original petromax mantle? One from Graetz, E&G or Heinze (good ones) where used with the BW version.
Most mantles of that size say 350/500 - but I have my doubts if the slightly smaller ones (say Coleman 99 size) are delivering the best results in a 500cp lantern. For 500 cp PXs my favourites are the Petromax Helox or the Peerless 111, but geting harder to come by/pricy.
@tom van thienen The mantle you showed was the best for me. But it is highly radioactive. I now use these two non radioactive varieties.
@tom van thienen , nice mantle. They are certainly radioactive but, there is always one, not highly and not dangerous as long as you don't eat or smoke them. I have several and also measured a lot of different brands with high grade military geiger counters. But besides that You need a 500cp version. Good old ones would be a package of Heinze mantles as they where stocked for and delivered with the BW lanterns.
@Reinhard These socks I have came with a lamp I bought onces..I have over 30 of them 350 cp. I guess they are not good for the 500 cp. I will buy new ones.
@tom van thienen I know that, that's why I showed you mantles in size 500cp.I would now take the opportunity to switch to non-radioactive mantles.Radioactivity is very insidious.Through the radiation and flying particles that you breath in.Both cause cancer. Our Hobby should bring joy and not be life-threatening.Only buy mantles that explicitly say "not radioactive" !
@Reinhard Yes indeed that would be the opportunity. I looked up the mantles in the shop where I buy them and it says NOT RADIOACTIVE. Time to make the switch. So for my Optimus 300 I need mentles 300CP then I guess..I will order all at once. Thank you..
