The lamp was acquired locally and was in reasonable condition. The paintwork appears to be original and has a textured finish. The shade came with the lamp. The lamp did need a strip down, clean and new seals before it became operational (Note the spider remains in the burner). Fuel type – Gasoline (So in Australia - Shellite) Nominal Rating 300 CP Jet size – 0.18 mm (guessametric using acupuncture needles and comparison with standard Coleman jet sizes) Pricker wire 0.15mm There are no identifying marks on any components. The lamp has a fuel shutoff valve. The shaft is screwed into an encapsulated nut in the wheel. A sellock pin prevents the shaft unscrewing from the wheel during operation. The jet pricker has a screw in/out rather than the usual push/pull operation. The packing in the vapouriser is woven asbestos, with a steel rod inserted in its centre. It is held together with wire ties at either end. I replaced the woven asbestos with Asbestos rope. The pump has a simple PIP style NRV but the pump rod has the ability to screw down and preventing fuel entering the pump in the event of a NRV failure.
Very nice, Martin. It’s good to see another of these up and running, especially with the original glass. You mentioned the jet pricker being a screw-in type. This is correct as the burner on these “Goulburn Specials” is the Quirk’s copy of the AGM burner. Quirk patented the screw-in pricker: https://classicpressurelamps.com/threads/quirk’s-burner-patent-no-3904-1921.17861/ Does your burner have a threaded port at the top that a finial could be screwed in to? Cheers Tony
Very smart looking lantern Martin. I have one the same green textured paint, burner and plate. Mine doesn’t have a globe so I’ve used a common cylinder globe but I’m fashioning a Collins Brothers hood, my jet is in the quirks wall lamp at the moment.
Thanks for detailing all the parts for your nice old lamp.. interesting to read about the history of these as well… Is it likely that these pumps were made locally as well? Such a lot of work has gone into these lamps it’s marvellous really regards, pb
That's a very good find and in good condition too. As has been mentioned in other posts, there were two styles of filler caps. One with the pump like this one and another that needed an external pump. Does anyone have an idea of the timelines for the two types?
@podbros the t It’s almost certain the pumps were made by Quirk’s. Nils I have pondered the timeline but these lamps remain somewhat mysterious. Tony
@Tony Press @Darryl Durdin @Walkop @JEFF JOHNSON @podbros @Nils Stephenson Thanks for the interest and additional information. Tony, yes it does, It is 1/4" x 20 TPI. It could be Whitworth or UNC?
Martin I think that hole is to fit a top insect screen that also acts to hold the glass in place. Cheers Tony
@ROBBO55 hi Martin, both of my table lamp have the screw in port at the top of the burner, they also both have the pump up check valve, it’s all very cool
