This is a USA made Coleman L427, dated March 1929 ("9 3"). Note that it has a re-stamped "slant" cage. It was found in Australia. I've learned a fair bit trying to sort out the characteristics of this lantern. Thank you @Akeepsake, @coleman54 and @Mackburner. "9 3" Fuel valve: Fuel pickup tube in tank. USA and British patens stamped on air tube. "Coleman Quick Lite" collar. Up and Running As it came Here is the cage after cleaning and before painting. I must say, this is an impressive lantern. I have another of the same date that has a different cage and vent, but it needs a bit of work. Cheers Tony
@Sellig33 The original generator would have been a Q99. Therefore the pricker control would not be present. This configuration of an L427 with the re-pressed “slant” cage seems to be uncommon, maybe slightly more common from Canada. I chose the setting of the cage based on a photograph sent to me by a USA collector, but it would suit the other way around, too. Tony
Here is the lantern with the cage clocked so that the "slant" cutout in over the control wheel. I understand from @coleman54 that these cages are not found with a consistent pattern to the position of the cutout. Cheers Tony
After using this lantern for a while, I’ve come to the conclusion that, for me (being right handed), the best position for the slant cutout is as shown below, especially if it were to have its original Q99 generator. That position allows lighting with a torch held in the left hand, and the right hand opens the fuel spindle. It also means that the mantles have clear frontage to the chimney/globe. Cheers Tony
