Fired up the ES . Just got yellow flames from the burners. Any help appreciated with this lamp as I am unfamiliar with them.
That looks like a kero flame but these are a gasoline lantern although they still require some pre-heating. It will run on kero but it won't perform at its best and will want more heat to start. To test without mantles try with a naphtha type fuel and a Tilley torch. That is much more pre-heat than needed but will help sustain the burn at low pressure. ::Neil::
I did try the lamp with petrol in it. I didn't pre heat the lamp though. Flames seemed to come from everywhere. Maybe it needs new seals as well?? Should I clean the generator as well?
A slight bit of progress with the ES. I found the generator was missing its jet, hence why I was getting massive yellow flames earlier. I replaced it with a coleman jet I had and got a more controlled burn. My other problem is I have a flame coming from the base of the generator as seen in the photo. Has anyone got a solution to this please?
At the risk of stating the obvoius you have a leak there. I think that these are the same types of generator as a coleman. Undo the nut and make sure there is no crud between the two mating parts. Re-fit and do a dunk test. If you still see bubbles coming from there consider annealing the base of the generator. also look for splits in the generator itself. In fact I would do the dunk test first. good luck !
after doing a dunk test it appears there is a leak coming from the base of the generator. i will have to consider my options as i guess there arent a lot of spares available for this type of lantern.
Is the bottom of the generator just a piece of brass pipe ie no nut on it? If so heat and quench the bottom end soften the brass cut say 3mm off it then screw it in tight with a bit of copper slip this will cut the thread slightly longer on the generator making a good seal done this on mine. Cheers pete
yes the generator is just a piece of threaded pipe. i will have to try the heat and quench method and cutting it down a bit.
i tried the heat / quench method and trimming the generator. It hasnt worked basically. i just find it a very awkward lamp to work with as well. i think id be happier to sell it or trade it for parts. it has some decent parts, i.e mica chimney. im sure someone on here would be interested. ive just had enough of it.
the generator did screw in, it just didnt tighten up enough in the end. i think you just got lucky with your fix there. it just didnt work for me. i just dont feel like throwing money at a lamp i find really awkward to work with.
Is there anyway you could flare the pipe a bit maybe knock the blunt end of a drill inside the generator then maybe it will bite better. I done this fix more than once are the threads really warn on lamp itself. I am also wondering if ptfe tape will seal it there or maybe it will be too warm for it.
i tried ptfe tape and the thread is too fine to take the tape, it rides up. maybe i will have one last try with the drill bit method.
I've tried again. It does seem to run a bit, but like I said before its such an awkward lamp, especially without the proper pump.
Sounds like you need a replacement generator. ES lamps are basically Akron Diamond copies and an Akron gen will fit and work well. OCP sell a repro Old Coleman Parts > Generators > Akron S Generator - R407 but if you talk to the US collectors you may well find a genuine Akron S gen over there. ::Neil::
