What do you think the scratches on the base say?

@Tony Press - The pressure vessel of the Petromax 828 was marked (5/0) in May 1940. This is according to @Reinhard, so no reason not to believe

For me it says 8 40 =August 1940.
If the scriber was moved from top to bottom the line is faint and if the scriber was moved from bottom to top the line is clearly visible.
You have to imagine it as I wrote it down on a piece of paper.

 

Nice lantern
Still an early Petromax from E and G. Although the nickel plating is almost entirely gone, it looks complete with all the original parts intact.
