Through a bit of trading, I was able to acquire this 300x, one piece at a time. This particular lantern looks to be an old crewe light. Can anybody assist me in identifying the crewe?
Hi @Matthew Lewis Kimmel and welcome ! A nice old lantern ; the brass plaque looks very similar to others sometimes seen on Tilley lamps used by railways. Crewe is a railway town in Cheshire.. the letters P and W probably stand for ‘Permanent Way’ referring to the teams that worked on and maintained the tracks etc Hope that helps regards, pb
Many thanks. It is always a benefit to know a little history regarding these old lanterns. This one has been a challenge in fettling, to say the least. I was having issues with overflaming on the mantle, and finally took apart the burner head and cleaned out quite a bit of dirt and carbon fouling. Now it runs like a champ.
Many thanks, and a big "Howdy" from South Texas. I have watching this site for months now; I guess it is time to start sharing a bit instead of just loitering on the sidelines.
You are welcome Yes, it’s surprising how much dirt and detritus can accumulate in such a small space as the burner.. even a few strands of cobweb can go unnoticed but still make a noticeable difference..
Excellent lantern - festive colours and such a long way from home ! Funny how they travel round the globe.
Yes, I traded a Coleman 202 for it with a member of the US Air Force. He obtained it while stationed in England.
