A Coleman 236 The Major Back to Life

Hi Everyone,

A great weekend to all. Just sharing this happy moment after successfully doing some clean-up of a Coleman 236 Canadian-made 12/1950 lamp. Not sure if it spot its original glass. This one had the new modern Coleman logo.

A week ago, I manage to get hold of this vintage lamp not far from where I live. Interestingly it came along with the original, now browned user manual and also an advertisement cutting of the lamp. Maybe at the point when it was purchased.

Quite a beauty with very minor rust mark and some rust on the lamp hood.
Manage to take it apart and cleaned the generator and also the pricking needle. straighten back the generator tube which was bent.

The original pump leather have gone bad with badly cracked edges. Manage to replace it temporarily with the spare cap.
Finally had a go at lighting it up for the first time last night and it was definitely a beauty. Lovely large lamp!!!

Next is to give it a good clean-up and polish. Still learning more about the Coleman lamps and hopefully to get one of the Kerosene ones.

I have been looking around for a Coleman kerosene lamp. But this gas one came up and after doing some reading on it, it looks like an interesting one due to its size. When I brought it home, then I realise that it’s actually quite huge.

it’s filler cap washer needs a change as it’s hardened up by the looks of it. Will look around and see if I can get a replacement locally.

You should be able to get a leather pump cup from TW Sands; and there’s a Tasmanian who sells them on the that well known online shopping site.

The glass on your lamp is a replacement, as you speculated above.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for the tips. Will check it out. I actually got a couple of pump leather for the Tilley and Austramax a couple of weeks back - not anticipating this Coleman lamp. So I just used one of them first. Looks like the cleanup on the bent prickler needle helped. It was kinda carbonised when first checked. Cleaned it up and all is good now.

Might just get the filler cap seal replaced.
