Hello, I have recently acquired a Tilley SL61 Hospital lamp. It sin very original unrestored condition, but missing the pump. The vaporiser is also very corroded and I may need to replace that. What more widely available Tilley can I use as a parts donor, to get as close as match of parts possible please?

    Thank you very much :)

Thanks The_Yellow_Ardvark :) I would like to know which other models use the same part as I doubt the SL61 had unique parts to them - I'm sure someone on the forum knows :)

Many Tilleys are found with variations of parts. The best thing to do is look in the ref library at other Tilley wall lamps. Wall Lamps, Hospital Lamps & Chandeliers (WL & CL You should recognise the parts ! I would go for a pump from a guardsman X246. Either type of vapouriser will work, but the longer 169 is the original size and will look much better. (but the guardsman used the shorter one)

    Hi @Richard Thompson

Would it be possible to post some photos of what you have? Always interesting to see a project and it just helps with the different Tilley models?

    thanks,
    pb

edit; I don’t have a hospital lamp but it may share more features with the PL53 model ?

There are male and female Guardsman pumps. The SL61 has an opening with male thread, the corresponding pump is part number 239 as used on R1 radiator, AL8 & 9 trackwork lamps, AL15 / 16 / 21 hand lamps, ML93, KL80.

Oh yes ! - well a pump from an R1 should not be too much of a challenge to find.

Thank you very much for all your advice. I would prefer to buy a doner for parts , that way I have something that provides mutiple parts, and I learn more about the world of Tilley - which seem more and more enourmous every day! :) Thanks Fireexit1 - I will now look up part number 239, look at what of R1, AL8 & 9, AL15, AL16, AL21 and ML93 and Kl80 I can purchase a partsd one for my needs. I have taken some pics, but only one would upload, - I need to reduce the file size of the others and then will then post. The thread is on the outside for the pump.

Your lamp has been cobbled together, early tank, later fuel pipe....

Is it a steel or brass tank, on the early tanks 'wartime' ones that brass plaque was present, advising not to over pump..etc

Thanks - re the fuel pipe you say the fuel pipe is later. I've an early tank, but the fuel pipe from a later SL such as the SL62?

The fuel pipe should have the deep socket really, for that tank....

Thanks Paul - just did a magnet test - the font itself, including base is not magnetic, but the pump thread soldered to the font is magnetic. I will go and have another look at at the pictures of SL61/62 in the Reference forum again, re the fuel pipe.

Regardless of the mix of parts, that lamp looks like it carries a lot of history.

The RD stamp appears on Tilley tanks into the early 1940s.

    Cheers

It was @podbros who said he could just make out an RD number. They are stamped on the bottom outside rim of the tank.

Your flag will reflect where your IP provider is casting from.

Gave the area around the number a bit of a rubb with 0000 wire wool - Im not seeing Rd 181 181 but to me it looks like 681 or 9189? Some one is now going to tell me that its not the correct fount and that is the carburetor bowl PXL_20231219_105037547 copy.jpg of a diesl powered dump truck or something!

They weren’t always stamped very well.. sometimes they were stamped twice.. sometimes sideways!

this is an idea of what it may have looked like or it may have been ‘Reg’ instead of ‘Rd’

he he, I think is has a lot of appeal just as it is. It has seen a lot of use and no doubt has had a few "accidents" along the way. Some parts may be slightly newer but that is part of its history and not unusual in this game, particularly if the lantern was involved with the military.

Back i the late 1970's and early 1960's the UK government was a concerned about the influence of the USSR in Africa.
So the opened up the Old WW2 stores and the Civil stores to send items to those countries.
They assembled a lot of lamps from the vast amount of spares and rebuilt them.

When I was on jankers in 1980, in Portsmouth I was on a team rebuilding lamps, stoves and heaters.
As we were not aloud to smoke we got a boiled sweet rations.

A Lamp would be placed on your desk, you striped it down. Cleaned it all up and took it to the test area.

The worse job was when you had be given a box of bits. You had to assemble as many as you could.

It was better tan running round the dockyard.
