Hi All Does anyone know where I can get a Petromax on off control wheel in the brown colour from? Base Camp do it in blue #111 but I need the brown to match my lamp. Many thanks.
Brown was never the original color for petromax, they too were originally blue from the factory but materials used caused it to darken with age I think. I could be wrong but that's what I gathered from reading around here.
I too admittedly prefer the dark brown look over the blue and I use the color as a quick glance gauge of an age of a petromax when I'm hunting around for genuine non-clones.
Caution when buying a new control wheel, the old items were made from a bakelite material that discoloured with age, the new items are made from a heat resistant plastic that will not discolour and will keep that atrocious bright blue
Yes, those newly produced wheels from China or elsewhere would never turn brown like the older ones, no matter how long you age them. I'm not sure if they're made of the same phenolic-bakelite resins or a different type but they are certainly using different types of pigments for the colour. The new ones seem to be a little too color-fast.
I will keep my eye out on the auction sites for the older versions and hopefully temporary use a new one to get the lamp working
