    Hello everyone.
Just put a seal kit trough my x246 Tilley lantern that i have just bought. When we fired it up for the first time there was a flame outside of the mantle and it smelt carbonny . We had an identical x246 lantern fired up for 4 hrs at same time and it didnt smell and is using the same mantle and same fuel( a1 jet fuel ) as mine that was flaming . Can anyone shed any light on what may be the cause and where i go from here? Thank you

Quite often this is due to an enlarged or worn jet orifice of the vaporizer. That can cause it to discharge more fuel than normal, thus offsetting the fuel-air ratio. You'd get symptoms like flame halo outside the mantle, smells that you described above or even a somewhat sooty burn due the fuel-air mixture being too rich.

By the way, have you cleaned out the air tubes and mixing chamber at the burner? If they are partially obstructed, you'd get similar symptoms too.
If the vaporizer or generator is badly carboned up internally, the heat might not penetrate well into the fuel for a proper vaporization of kerosene.

    Hi Ross
It could be vapouriser problem . You could try the one out of your good lamp to see if that cures the problem, if it does a replacement vapouriser may be needed.

Be careful if you are inside with fumes like that, best to be outside or if you can’t then a well ventilated area

Quite a few folks do a pre mantle test burn after preheating.. don’t pump too much more than the 15-20 pumps needed for start up.. this lets you have a look at the flamelets coming straight out of the burner
Tony Press has posted quite a few photos of his so you can get an idea of what to expect? The thread is called
    ‘Testing Burners’
    Good luck with it
