Here is a tool I made this weekend after having a bit of a tough time removing the check valve (NRV) from the pump of an old L220. The hardest part, even on a lathe is boring a six inch long ¼ inch hole, and get to perfectly on center all the way down the piece. I will admit I cheated a little. I started with 5/8 inch round bar bored it, put the work piece on centers, and turned the outside true to the inside. The only other part a person without a lathe may encounter is the threads on the center piece. As it would be Coleman used 32 TPI pitch on the air stem, and ¼ -32 threading dies aren't standard. I cut mine on the lathe. The other end was easy, a ¼ -28 tap and die for the top of the rod and the brass nut. Operation is quite easy. Remove the pump. Unscrew and remove the air stem. Screw the inner rod into the air stem hole. Slide the outer piece over the inner rod. Turn the outer piece until it's lugs engage the check valve's slots. Instal and tighten the brass hand nut. A 3/8 wrench can be use to turn the extractor. Here are some Pics Rick

Thats preaty cool. I would not have even tried looking for an odd size die like that. I wounder were you find 1/4-32 screws besides at the bottum of a Coleman air pump? I found the die can be gotten quite easily here in the states as well abbout $6.00 usd on ammazon. This tool can be a reel time/lamp saver. I highly recumend buying making or burrowing one for those who work on Colemans allot. A standerd screw driver can do scarey things to those check valves. Rick
I think Coleman used gas fitting threads or other odd threads to prevent someone attaching something that the lantern wasn't designed for. The tiny pump cap screws on a 242 are another oddie. 4-36 thread, I think it is an old clockmaker's thread. You can run a 4-40 tap through the hole and convert them to 4-40, which are common in this area (California) Dan
Hi Rick 1/4 x 32 is a common thread in the model engineering world and as such, bolts that size are readily available for model making in general. It's also the thread for 'glowplugs' in nitro engines in model aeroplanes/helicopters/car etc
