X246 tank bolt thread size

    Hi guys. My X246 TIlley has an "iffy" thread on one of the bolts/studs on the tank where the cage leg nut threads onto. Only one bolt/stud appears to have a burr on the thread, the other three are good.
    When i attach the cage to the tank, the same bolt/stud goes very firm after two complete turns of the ferrule nut, this is of course regardless of which of the four cage ferrule nuts are tried. Question: What thread and size is it? I've worked out so far that it is a 5/16 coarse thread may be BSW (Whitworth)?????

    I'll have a look tomorrow but from memory it could be a whitworth thread... maybe 1/4 inch? I'll have a definitive answer tomorrow evening.

    Sorted, the thread measures 5/16 x 22tpi which makes it 5/16" BSF

    I ran my 5/16 BSF die over it to make sure and it was perfect.

    I have to say I was surprised that is was BSF as it looked like a course thread!

    PS... in case anyone's interested, I measured the diameter and the thread pitch before checking my taps and dies to confirm it was correct. No force was used and no threads were damaged in the process.

    Thanks Colin you're a life saver. I agree! The thread looks coarse, giving the impression that it's a BSW (whitworth) thread.

    I did read a post yesterday on CPL from a few years back about Tilley using their own "special threads" through out the lamp, hence me throwing a question up on here just to be safe rather than sorry.

    Just on a side note for all those interested, my mate and I have been successfully cleaning out old vapourisers by using carburettor cleaner in a spray can. Half an hour of spraying the stuff inside the vapouriser with the little straw provided with the carburettor cleaner, shaking it vigorously a few times with your thumb over the threaded end and out comes the carbon. Do this over a half hour period interspersed with using the pricker wire from the outside to clear the jet of the vapouriser every so often caused by carbon flaking away. End result is a clean vapouriser and a good bright burning Tilley.

    Good tip, thanks. I've used heat/rapid quenching which is quite good but I'll have to try carb cleaner.

    A couple of years back I was sick of finding threads on lanterns that were either rare, proprietary or downright weird so I started collecting old boxed sets. I've now got most commonly available thread types and even some less common ones!

    Tilley use BSCY - British Cycle threads quite a lot on their lamps as well as BSB - British Standard Brass, but I had no idea the frame studs were BSF! Unfortunately the BSF set I've got has a huge 5/16 die, 1.5 inches in diameter which wont go right down to the bottom of the thread... looks like I'll just have to buy another die specifically for Guardsman frame studs!
