Hi and Hello from John Mulholland a newbie to the forum Could you please help me to identify the above Lamp Tilley 1258X and give a little information if possible as to the lettering and numbering system on the base I have owned this Lamp for over 40 years and has been adorning my shed for the last 25 years I know that the globe is a GTC 171 British Made Heat Resistant I worked in Baker Street London for 7 years as a drainage consultant in the 1980's for a company called The "Economic House Drainage and Flue Repair Company Limited" Established in 1899 so Tilley Lamps were used on our workmans hand carts which they pushed across London to various repair jobs The Lamp was given to me by our yard storeman along with an opened box of 171 Globes I opened the box a couple of years ago just to have a look and noticed that there were flaws and uneven rims in the glass globes does this mean that they were hand blown ? also they are different weights ranging from 5.5 ounces to 6.5 ounces which I thought strange Any help would be appreciated Thanks in advance Regards John
Hi presscall Thanks for your prompt reply and your suggestion about uploading photos I will do so as soon as I can. I have photos of the old box on my mobile camera roll but not of the Lamp I'll take some of the Lamp and post soon Many thanks John
Hi John and welcome to CPL ! the stamp gives it a date of December ‘58 but that could apply to a lot of lamps or lanterns! interesting history there is lots of information available here on a wide range of lighting and some great introductions for new members :-) looking forward to seeing your photos Cheers, pb
G'day mate, it's always wonderful to have new members here. Enjoy the wealth of information, and don't be afraid to ask questions. I was told there are no silly questions here, and that's is so true. Goodluck mate.
The most common Tilley Lamp bearing the 1258X stamp is the later version of the X246 model. This is archetypal (UK) pressure storm lamp; it used the 171 glass. But as others have said, a photo will identify it for certain.
