Hi fellas, hello all lanterneers, There is going to be a great gathering of lanterneers at Ballarat Victoria, the location is the same as the last gathering some years ago. The site and ammenities are good. It will be a once in a life event for us lantern enthusiasts, as it may never be held again. The opportunity to meet in person the fellas you may already know, share skills sets, advice, supplies, parts pieces alternatives. C up of tea/coffee or your favourite cordial, The event is open to everyone who maybe interested in looking and Australian lighting history. I’m excited about it , I don’t know what to wear or what lanterns to bring or what else can we do as a group, so I’ve made a proposed list , it not set in stone and there’s no need to keep up with the joneses next door, Firstly and above all FUN, fun, FUN. Bring what you are comfortable to bring. Maybe your first lantern. Your favourite A lantern with some history attached to it, Your first fettle Rare or unique Your wick lantern if you want Hollow wire lamps Table lamp, wall lamp. Your oldest or newest lantern, Something that needs attention Bring your skills set something that you have had to make fit / work/repair. Pictures/ photos/ advertising. Instructions paperwork’s etc. Maybe a competition, longest running lantern on all the same measure of fuel, open to suggestions. It’s not only lanterns. Stoves , heaters, blow torch, irons, I’m sure the the same interest in these as well. I’m thinking of putting it up on socials media to expand the event to more local population . Thoughts on that? March 9-11/24. @Anthony @Sedgman @Paul Aslanides @ROBBO55 @Tony Press
Darryl, your enthusiasm is amazing and I reckon a lot of great ideas there. I think @Anthony has already put some great information out on social media in the right places. Yes, Ballarat, always a good idea to have aheater or two along.
@Darryl Durdin Looking forward to seeing you there. I’ll bring some silbrazing gear, and probably a few hollow wire lights to get running. I need to leave space in my car (if I can get a ferry booking) to bring back some boxes waiting for me on the big island. If there’s anything anyone wants me to bring, let me know. Cheers Tony
Repeating a challenge I set in 2017 for a light up of Tilley FSs against the Great Ballarat floodlight light up. In addition to my two there is now another known of which sold in Aberdeenshire and headed South. Bring it home! let’s have the great FS light up here in my garden.
Jean, I may be able to take my two SLs, but I can’t fit all my of my FL6s… I’d love to bring them to Aberdeenshire, but it would be hard sailing! Tony
It will be good to meet you in person. I have started sorting a few item to bring. There are appliances from both the light and dark side. It takes me 2 days traveling but that allows for a bit of lantern /stove hunting on the way.
Ballarat Meet - Latest News The meet on the long weekend in March (9th, 10th & 11th March) is looking likely to be the largest to date and will probably be the last for some time. Please do not plan on attending the next; this is the one to come to at Staffordshire Reef, near Ballarat, Victoria. Theme - Anything; Plus Gloria @Darryl Durdin made many great suggestions earlier in this thread and several confirmed attendees have discussed and suggested this event's theme is Gloria, Gloria, Gloria (and of course anything else you want to bring. The reason is that Gloria made a hell of a lot of different products including irons, lanterns, lamps, stoves and hollow wire stuff. Gloria documentation would also be well received. Repeat; include some Gloria stuff if you can but please bring anything that you want to. I will be bringing some Austramax, BAT, Coleman, Tilley and Companion stuff for example as well as Gloria. PS To impress a certain Scottish lassie we will have a special challenge on Gloria 400s with a number of these being displayed. Details and Directions These were included in a recent post here: Possible Australian Lantern and Stove Get Together The link to the directions in a larger format were included in a previous Meet's Directions and these are still valid directions for this meet. So see the large format directions here: Ballarat / Staffordshire Reef Lampers Gathering #3 See you there and by the way, if you can only make it for a day or two that would be great also.
So, how many Gloria 400s do you expect @Sedgman ? If it’s more than 4 I may have to withdraw my challenge. Come on, UK collectors, surely there are dozens if not hundreds of Tilley floor standards out there? Don’t be shy.
Hmm, @Jean J , friendly challenges with Brits are always good fun. I must go practice counting with two hands, just in case. Sincerely
Darryl, you are doing well. I am still collecting cardboard boxes. Wrap glass super carefully as Victorian roads are regrettably worse than SA and especially bad on highway near Beaufort.
No, they are very elusive in my neck of the woods. Maybe one day, I thought about having one made. I seen some reproductions on lantern lovers site Taiwan it haven’t seen it again
Hi Darryl Was that the site that pancholoco pointed to a few wks ago? They have some amazing stuff.. really got their act together www.kitelamp.com
@podbros , thank you for the lead, I’ll be checking it out. It is the site and they do some great work
I’m nearly done packing, we are excited to be going to Ballarat , staffashire reef, see you all there , safe travels @Tony Press @Anthony @ROBBO55 @Sedgman @Paul Aslanides
Good on you Darryl, safe travels to you and I have just finished the packing too. What a challenge. @Darryl Durdin
It was a great three days at Staffordshire Reef despite temperatures getting up to +/- 38°C (100°F for the ancients). Here is a representation of bits and pieces of what was there and what we talked about. We would be happy to answer any questions. The meeting site in perspective. Sophisticated tarpology to provide respite from the heatwave. A line up including 5 Gloria 400s and … guess what the big one is? [With part of Darryl Durdin’s Gloria 400 showing] A line up of hollow wire lamps. ….More to come! Cheers Tony
Some lighting up. Big Bertha! [Note the fire hose] We’ve had discussions here before about why Tilley sold lanterns and lamps into Australia with the designation “IP” (insect protection). Here’s why… That’s a Coleman 237 after one evening… Thanks to host @Anthony, and @ROBBO55, @Sedgman, @Darryl Durdin, @kero-scene, Bernie Holmes, and many others for a great weekend. Cheers Tony
Wow - what a lot of very precious things ! Great show guys and I can see it must have been a lot of fun
A wonderful friendly meet with over a dozen participants; the largest to-date of the 4 Australian meets. Originally scheduled for Natimuk, the move to Staffordshire Reef allowed more people to attend. Thanks @Anthony for being a great host. We had people there from 4 states and 1 territory. The following are some of my very random photos. Orange hooded Austramaxes do not exist; Myth Busted. Tilley 'Big Bertha' Floodlight and almost a 'selfie'.
