Hello all, I'm not on the stove Forum and I know plenty of you are. This is the reasons why I'm asking here: 1.Is the Tilley CS56 stove a must for your Tilley collection? 2.So are they a good stove? 3.Are the highly sort after? 4.Would you recommend them to others? Any information would be appreciated. Regards Brian.
From my very limited stove experience I'd say the CS22 burns hotter than other stoves the same size. I can't remember how adjustable they are though.
I would answer yes to all your questions Brian but this is the only stove I’ve ever used for heating/cooking on so maybe I’m a bit biased.
You don’t have to be a subscriber there to look at what’s been said though. Like HERE, HERE and HERE. As a functioning stove, it’s ok. Simmers if pushed (low tank pressure) but it’s really just something to boil water on. The usual kerosene stove has an air release, so you can get food up to heat on a higher tank pressure, easily reduce the pressure for simmering, then increase the flame intensity should you want to by operating the pump. A regulating stove burner makes it even more of a doddle. Flame output control is fiddlier on the Tilley because of its limited simmering ability and because unscrewing the pump to release pressure isn’t as convenient as using an air screw. It’s why I added an air screw to my ‘project’ CS56, which very early Tilley lamps had I gather. John
I was lucky enough to find one at a gathering here in the States. Was very happy to add it to the collection. I recently found 2 1560 vaporizers that appear to be new, will have them later this week.
@Dean D that does look nice mate. To all other members thanks for your comment they are very much appreciated. Now that I have had some good answers to my questions, yes Anthony I did have a hidden agenda. I have obtained an unfired one, and getting my answers has made my decision for me to leave it unfired.
@Dean D No just the stove. Dated July 1957, these are the only photos I've taken at the moment. It's in the queue.
@Buggerlugs Has the fuel tank been stripped of paint? I’d expect it to have the customary painted tank of a Tilley.
@presscall My answer would be yes as the base plate is gold and around the pump has remnants of gold paint, also in the nooks and crannies. That's how I got it, so the Fount will be resprayed again in gold, eventually. But not this year.
@Buggerlugs Mine is dated June 57 and has a Thacker label on the bottom at the time was the second earliest one Neil has documented, @Mackburner found paper stating mine could have been for export and been polished brass. What do you think Neil?
A bit over designed but that’s also why they are very cool. They have 3 pre burners surrounding the generator.
