Hi everyone How can I touch up a small( 1/2 diameter of pencil eraser circle rust spot on fount) Bare metal rust spot on a 1929 nickel cq fount( see picture)
Hi @My29cq329 im pretty sure that the fount is Brass? (check with a magnet though) careful localised polishing will bring up the brass colour which should be less noticeable? some folks have used an electrolytic paint brush with some success if you use the search bar (right hand corner) type in Electro brush painting Member - Scott D worth a read regards pb
If you did use the oven cleaner then it may have turned it pink.. chemicals can target the zinc in the brass to leave the copper.. the nickel may have been a bit thin there to begin with? It looks well for its age!!
Did they make any with steel upper founts?( Or were they all brass?) I heard the bottoms are steel but not sure,I'll check today and post results)
Magnet did not stick, so now the question is should I try touching it up with silver paint or not? The main reason that I wanted to get it coated with something was for the factor of it rusting a hole in the tank but now that I know that's not possible I may just leave it alone...
I wouldn’t bother with paint.. I would carefully polish by hand..you may lift more of the nickel so be sparing with the force used
