Been after some lamps for a while. First one I found was a well used/abused Coleman 1/61 159X missing all the top hardware. This morning followed up on a lead and bagged a Coleman 1/55 159X complete apart from the shade and a Coleman 4/47 156 missing globe, finial and external pump. Rinsed the tank on the 159X, tightened the glands, oiled the pump leather and put on one mantle. Filled up, preheated and she lit up beautifully. Folks around here obviously did not like the original paint as they were all stripped to bare brass. Lots of questions on the way.
Nice finds! quite a few lamps & lanterns have been stripped back over the yrs.. even plated ones good to have the globe and the shade holder cheers pb Ive just seen the bottle top! nice one:-)
The 159x has cleaned up nicely, congratulations The air intake restrictor has been removed (kerosene mode). Are you running it on kerosene?
Good Morning, @podbros I thiought the bottle top was an attempt to stop paraffin leaking onto the handle that is badly burnt. Initially thought it came off an old coke bottle. @Martin It is running on paraffin as i do not have a restrictor. If i can get measurements it should not be a problem to make one and try Benzine. Can anyone please give me measurements for a shade as i am going to attempt to manufacture one. Pictures of a bare frame would be appreciated or is the one i have complete? Is there an attachment for a small bicycle pump to use on the 156? Kind Regards Andre
I bought a small pack of plastic ball/balloon adaptors for a bike pump and some seem to work well on the coleman fillercap/valve. I also use a basic "o" ring to seal the cap - no need for a hard to find coleman seal.
It’s good that you have the shade holder @AHG and good luck with finding a Coleman shade. They’re hard to find - I should know.
Thanks @AHG yes, the old coke bottles! I think you have the top ring as it has the shaped parts for a mica heat protection globe? Here is a picture from the gallery that shows a reproduction shade and at the top of the picture is where to find it Here is a view of the hanging arrangements.. This may not be the ‘correct’ shade for your lamp.. there will be catalogues held by members that pinpoint the year perfect model of shade for your lamps This example by @Tony Press has some measurements if you wanted to keep your original frame and maybe use other materials? This shade seems to have been made from a type of plastic.. this did away with using side supports Thanks to @Blueflame and @Tony Press
Thank you to everyone for the replies and information. The shade holder might belong to the 156 or not at all part of these lamps. To make a shade i was thinking of using electrical paper - used for insulation when they rewind electrical motors. Any other ideas? Regards Andre
Andre, My Air restrictor measures 15.08mm (19/32”) Outside Diameter and 6.72mm (17/64”) High. The air hole measures 7.08mm Diameter. The thread is Unified National Special (UNS) 1/2” x 27 TPI (In a pinch a ½” BSB (26TPI) will sometimes fit the ½” Coleman 27TPI thread).
