Checking components. Quite a sophisticated control valve/piezo ignition mechanism. Fuel source is a pierceable butane cartridge, Campingaz type. The cartridge housing screws onto the lantern upper body and drives the cartridge onto the spike and rubber seal, which is fortunately in good condition. The seal appears to be unique to this lantern, compared with Campingaz equivalents, though these two supplied by Base Camp are evidently not identical. John
Hi John I’m not a particular fan of gas lamps and stoves, however I do have a soft spot for the older Bluet ones. This “jolly lamp” would definitely fall into the soft spot category. It’s more stylish than most and appears to be bright for its size. Sadly, I was unable to get the videos to play @presscall . Thanks for posting. Regards, Jeremy
A very modern style lamp john if it wasnt for the gas container at the base could be LED lamp at ikea Cheers pete
Thanks fellas! Compared with a contemporary Tilley gassie I believe the Italian lamp exceeds it in terms of style. A taller frosted glass enhances the lines and the control lever blending in with the lamp body’s contours contrasts favourably with the utilitarian control knob on the Tilley.
The difference between the two is that a designer had a hand in it's manufacturer from the very beginning. I'm talking about someone with genuine Industrial Design experience. Back in the day, Italy kind of led the way in terms of well designed products and if you know about these things (my degree is in Industrial Design) the signs are unmistakable! The design Centre in London used to be full of beautifully crafted designs like this until it shut up shop, presumably because no-one cared enough any more. Treasure that lantern, it's quite beautiful in it's calculated modernity.
The way the semi-circular section of the handle fits neatly into the base of the lantern is very pleasing, and the integrated adjustment lever is genius... and the ignition at the end of the adjustment stroke... fantastic! I'm loving this lantern more and more! (I only just watched the two videos!)
Great news about the design museum! It disappeared from it's original location and I assumed it was gone for good!
