A tilley came along at a price I couldn’t resist so now I have four. This one was in very good condition and after fitting some new seals I put about 250ml in the font and fired it up. All I got was the hiss of escaping air from the top of the vaporiser. It turns out fuel pickup appears to bottom out a little higher than my other tilley lamps due to a greater bend radius: The pictures aren’t the best, but… vs Is this to be expected or a manufacturing defect? Had I a long enough pliers is it feasible to consider gently straightening it a little or is the wiser course of action to just accept this one takes a bit more fuel to get going and won’t burn as long? -R
I doubt that is a manufacturing defect. Perhaps a previous owner bent it by accident whilst using a screwdriver to scrape some stubborn crud off the base. Feasible to straighten the tube a little ? Yes. Possible? Maybe, it depends on which way the tube is bent. I've just looked in the tank of 2 R1 heaters and a X246 lantern, in each case the tube is bent to the left more or less at 90 degres to the filler hole. However, the tube in a table lamp is bent directly away from the filler. Can you use a screwdriver or make something similar preferably with a hook on the end to re-align the tube? Could be easier than finding pliers long enough and slim enough to get far enogh through the opening.
