    Hi Everyone,

A great day to everyone. I would like to share this joy of just being able to bring back an old non-date-stamped Tilley Guardsman back to life.

Got a couple of Tilleys off the marketplace, apparently someone inherited these old lamps from their in-laws and they had to get rid of them to make space.

Thanks to the discussions here in the forums and also after watching some YT videos, I gave it a go to try bring one of the Tilleys back up as the other one had no glass.

Badly rusted on some parts an also caked up in the tank, I had to scrub and rinse clean the whole thing. Pump leather is gone and disintegrated. I had to DIY with a rubber piece.

Checked the rubber seals and they looked ok. (If all goes OK and can turn ON, I am going to get the seals kit).

Interestingly easy to disassemble and get to all parts to clean, except the pressure gauge contraption inside.

Here’s some photos of the works. It’s really fun and great learning and the opportunity to get into the minds of the designers.

Big thanks to - Broadlander on YouTube for his videos. Learned lots of stuff and gained confidence to try fixing the lamp.

    Regards,
    Sully

    Thanks Pete.

I was surprised to see the inside of the tank like filled with soil - which I think it’s possibly the fuel caked up with the fuel and oxidised internal bowl.

Anyway, I was soo happy that it lit up OK. One setback is that it didn’t have the pre-heater cups. Being used to the Austramax, I figured that to get the same heating effect of the generators, I pre heated with one of those long neck redhead lighter. Which I think I will just use this approach and get those gas refill.

Checked the price of the pre-heater cups and they are not cheap. Maybe will try to find one somewhere - or make one with those small candle cups.

Yes!! Today, I also manage to pay a visit to TW Sands and get to know them. Got some seals lots for the Tilley and also the Austramax.

Got another Tilley to work on to try to make it work too.

    Hi everyone,

just an update on the functionality of the revived Tilley. I swapped the first Mantle to the proper double tie mantle I got from TWSands and also did some clean up on the pressure indicator. Was soo happy that the pressure indicator works well. Pin is up when pressurised and pin down when depressurised. Gave it a good brush internally too, just afraid that the initially corroded looking orifice module would be leaking. But thank God it didn’t.

One little bummer is that I tied the mantle upside down and didn’t realised there is the butterfly mantle logo and it’s upside down.

Good to get it going. I’ve got a bunch of those TW Sands double tie mantles and they are very good.

    Cheers

    Tony

Yesh!!! Manage to get the Tilley pre-heater and I can use it for the other lamp too. Have not touched the 2nd lamp yet. Reserve for Summer break project.
