Hello all, my most recent aquisition is a Tilley R1 heater equipped with the old (pre war?) type burner head. From the Tilley lamps I own so far I know that no further adjustments to the burner in regard to the tip of the generator are required. The latest one does not start and run very well (yellowish flame even after generous preheating) , so I took of the mantle/cover to check for the gap/clearance mixing chamber to generator tip. Pls see pics attached . When just dropped on the gen the burner sits right on top of the generator with no slot at all to allow air flow. Adjusting the slot with a wire type clamp preventing the burner to sit on top of the gen the radiator worked a lot better.(alike on the Petromax ) Am I missing a part in the burner? The other, later R1 I own works like charm with high acceptance factor by my wife ) Guesses, answers, advice welcome Regards Thomas As Is: After Fettling:
Burner looks incomplete ie missing a cover. Check out the reference gallery. Someone will be more accurate but from a quick look that's what I think.
Hi Sedgman , I removed the pipe type thingy normally covering it to have a better look at the assembly.
Hi @fafnir I think usually there may be a part cast into the heater that the vapouriser sits against? This may have worn or broken off allowing the burner to drop too low? perhaps it is possible to braze a suitable washer in there? regards pb
@fafnir The tip of your vapouriser is still too high up in the burner body Thomas. Here’s how it should be. My post HERE might help. The mantle support should have a rim which provides a positive stop for the vapouriser. John
Thanks for clarification, John . That's what I was looking for . So I assume I need a new mantle support ... Regards Thomas
@fafnir Finding a spare might be difficult. Repairing the mantle support by brazing on a ‘stop’ would be my approach.
Hello , took me a while to find the time to have a look at the Radiator again. To provide the burner head the required clearance I made a wire clip and attached it to the vapouriser. Lighting and run proved to be successful. Thanks to all for the support. Regards Thomas
