Correct: it should be able to withstand the heat.

    Cheers

I went out to the shed and put a spare R1 burner on my Tilley X246 test bed.

I know that the vapouriser is excellent, and that the pressure pip works properly.

Starting without the mantle to show the flame:

    Long pre-heat.

Lowish pressure (just enough to stop it “popping” out).

Good pressure; flames not lifting away from the burner.

Flame lifting away from the burner. This can be ameliorated sometimes by rotating the burner on the vapouriser, but it does indicate that you’re near adequate pressure for the burner.

    With mantle fitted:

    Reasonable pressure.

    Flame lifting away from burner.

Allowing burner to get hot (about three minutes) and increasing the pressure.

The pip on the pressure indicator is about a millimeter from the very top. The pip maxes out at the top with 3/4 full tank and 100 pumps (so slightly less pressure for the R1 than running the X246 lamp burner. Note: no yellow or sooty flames anytime in this process unless the burner was not hot enough.

    Cheers

OK, thats interesting to see Tony.
Could be possible that i might have a little wear on the jet perhaps, but looks similar results to what im getting.

Just because it was there on the bench, I put a Bialaddin radiator burner on the Tilley:

It works ok but sits loosely on the smaller diameter Tilley vapouriser. That looseness may affect the air/fuel mix somewhat.

I’m wondering whether a cylindrical substitute Tilley heater mantle (see earlier posts in this thread) would work better on your R1. But before going down that path, have you triple checked there are no dead spiders or wasp nests in the burner?

    Cheers

The burner looks pretty clean inside, but no harm done in blowing it out with the air compressor to be on the safe side.

They work well on a Kayen heater, so can't see any reason for not working on a Tilley.

    - it would to take much to make a small insert - I have always found the Bialaddin burner a bit better than the Tilley design
