Hi folks, picked up a CLX for a song, the only obvious issue is a missing thread for the nut to hold the vent secure. This is the preferred, IMHO, 290 model that has the frame assembly so sturdier and has 4 pillars for added globe protection.
Can I simply use a length of threaded rod as a substitute?
    Many thanks,

Just let me check how this goes together. Give me an hour or so…

    Cheers

    @JohnL

I haven’t dissected one of these but it looks like the threaded bolt is fitted to the mixing chamber from the inside.

The join between the threaded bolt and the mixing chamber should be airtight. Therefore you will need to fix your new threaded part by silbrazing or similar. It will be too hot up there for ordinary plumbing or electrical solder.

    Happy to discuss further…

    Cheers

    Thanks @Tony Press
If I shake the burner assembly, I can hear what must be the top end of the bolt.
To access, does the main or burner tubes unscrew?

I’ve not ever had to pull down one of these new type burners, so I’m not sure how the burner tubes are attached to the mixing chamber.

But the whole burner assembly can be taken off the lantern.

When I said “airtight” above I really meant no gaps where volumes of air can be sucked in it the top, so if you recover all the bits that may be inside the mixing chamber it might be able to be fixed with some panel beating and muffler putty.

Tony, the whole bolt was rattling in around there.

I fashioned a magnetic picker to grip and push the bolt back through (took a while [-o<), eventually was able to grab it and pull through. I then fastened with one of those ubiquitous "Super-6" square nuts.

There's enough protruding to secure the vent.

Generator is a work of art. Double springs and relatively clean. Thankfully pricker was good but tip looked suspect so did a few heat/quench cycles to clear the jet proper as well as a bit of carby soak.

Came with these, which to me look like Silk-Lites, that pale aquamarine colour? Might fire up with some expendables first, just to be sure.

Gave the fount a polish and rubbed off a few blemishes on the cage with 0000/Kero. Fuel filler gasket done, massaged the pump cup and she pumped up fine. I got a nice flame at the burner heads.
Will add a pic fully running later.

Cheers again for the steer, John

    Great work!

Does the extra "lift" that the square nut gives to the hood cause any problems for the globe?

    Cheers

    Thanks!

No issues with square nut, recall that the 290 has the cage that the globe sits nicely in/on, kind of independent of the vent. The vent rests on top of the cage.

290A is similar to 282, 285 and 295 where the handle is in the vent and it actually rests on the glass iirc. I think also the 290 is the last of those picket fence globes, a shame as they brilliantly tame the ferocious output of these lanterns.

The actual protruding thread could have been taller but I didn't want to press my luck as it was a real mission pulling that errant nut through.

Seems to run ok, maybe it could be a touch brighter? I'm using cheapy mantles. Or maybe a little air escaping from that repair?

    For now, good enough.
    Cheers
