I use normal oil lamps every year while camping in Europe. I have a Dietz, a Feuerhand Baby and 2 Guillouards. Now I discovered the Petromax. It's looks, techniques and availability of parts appeals to me. But in the campsite the noise of a burning Petromax is quite... Noisy? I love it but that probably doesn't apply to everyone. So for my next lamp I'm looking for a less noisy and less brighter burning lamp. I'm now negotiating with a man who is selling a Tilly. He says the noise of a Tilly nowhere comes near the Petromax. It's very quiet. Is this true? In YouTube videos I think it's still quit noisy. Any ideas for a quiet lamp with lower or adjustable brightness? I mainly use the lamp for cozy light while camping or sitting outside on a beautiful summer evening. For maximum light output I now have a Petromax 829/500CP and a Petromax 828/350CP
I don't find Tilly to be a "silent" lamp, but they are absolutely more silent than most Petromax. It is on the other hand also much a matter of different light output. Much light create more sound. But other things affect. I don't know what (probably design of the jet, how the air is mixed and a variety of other factors), but different lamps of the same ratio do absolutely sound differently much. If you wan't a kerosene (paraffin) lantern, you might consider getting an old Radius 119. They are pretty low in noice compared to their light output. Primus 981 is very gentle, but perhaps harder to find. But they are extremely "silent". But for a good affordable and easier-to-find lantern; go for a Coleman. I think they are pretty moderate in the amount of sound they create. Atleast those I got.
Coleman used to sell backpacking lanterns that are tiny, the Model 222, 222B, 226, 229, 3022 (they all follow the same design language with the 226 being the first "dual fuel" which can burn gasoline/naptha in the product stack)
Ok, thanks. But I only see Colemans who will burn gasoline or white gas or Coleman Fuel? Do they work on kerosine too? Gasoline seems to dangerous too me and is another type of fuel... I just bought 20 litres of kerosine and I can use it in all my storm lamps, both the Petromaxes and my Aladdin 21. Will do some research on the Radius and Primus.
Sadly no kero, you can find a Coleman 237 which is somewhat quieter than a petromax and burns kero and gasoline. Or the current production Coleman 639.
For pressure lanterns, I think I could recall that the old Primus ones are some of the least noisy. For probably even lower noise from a pressurized lamp, I'm not sure how does this one fare:-
If you can get one in good order a Coleman 249 Scout are a quiet little lantern. Kerosene, easy to operate and parts are readily avaliable from the U.S. Austramax's whilst a great lantern can be a bit raucous when they are going at full throttle.
Radius 119 or a Tilley. The Tilley has the benefit of a double tie mantle which handles car travel to the campsite better than a single tie mantle on most other lanterns The bialaddin 310 also uses a double tie mantle and is a little smaller compared to the Tilley but more robust. In my opinion a Coleman 237 is loud and heavy on fuel and I have never used one for camping.
@SulphurTX I have found when filming lamps they always sound louder on the film/phone than in real life so it’s hard to get a correct answer there. you could just get a basic camping Gaz maybe ebay or similar, little money, just to try? If you don’t like it then straight back on ebay or marketplace ? regards, pb
Thanks all, wil have a look at all the options! And I would like to buy a Petromax HK150 of CP150.... But they are very rare. There's one for sale on eBay for 1000 euro!
To understand why some lamps are quiet while others more noisy, one way to study it is to compare the design difference between a roarer-type stove with that of the silent burner. The more turbulent the flow of the fuel-air mix and that of the resulting flame, the noisier it is. Those with laminar flows and flames are quiet.
I just bought a Tilley as some of you suggested. It looks good and was cheap so I'll give it a try. Let you know my experience when the Tilley arrives! Thanks for the feedback. Camping Gaz is not just a lamp for me... And I like kerosine as a fuel. The heat from the lamp is a great benefit when camping.
As reliable as many seem to claim, be mindful that the vaporizer from a tilley is almost nigh non-servicable, it's basically a disposable component.
But when you have a good one.. I am now sitting beside a 1974 X246B which has a Korean replacement vap that can be serviced. It hisses quietly and it is not too bright. I have another with an original vap that is rusty as hell but it works just fine. I don't know.
I found the Aladdin 1A to be the quietest lantern in my collection. I guess the Radius 119 it is based on would perform similarly.
