Run a Petromax on low pressure for less brighter light?

Hello, in some situations the light of my Petromax-lamp 500 and 350CP is just to bright for a cosy evening sitting in the garden with my pressure lamps. Will it harm the mantle, the lamp or anything else to run the lamp for example at 1 bar pressure? I can't find much information about it.

Bleed it out, reduce pressure to reduce light, but you'll be entering flame up territory as the heat on the vaporizer drops. You'll risk having back burn as the flame from the mantle jumps inside the J-tube causing it to glow and melt. You'll hear it make a scary roaring sound when it happens. When that happens, bleed it to shutdown. If you're brave, blow against the vent through the holes where the air intake is and hopefully it'll push that back burn back into the mantle.

Alternative is sourcing a frosted globe, which should diffuse the light.

The 350/500 cp Petromax type lanterns aren't meant for cosy settings.. They are meant for high intensity, maximum light illumination.
Use a smaller lantern or possibly a lower-rating Tilley or the newer adjustable Coleman units.
If the environment is cool, letting the Petromax 350/500cp to operate at 1 bar pressure is allowing it to enter 'borderline' conditions. Yes, the light will reduce, so does the vaporizing heat.
I do have at least one of these Petromax that could be operated satisfactorily at 1 bar but not all of them would still behave in this manner predictably in this pressure range.
    Not exactly recommended.

    Amen!
It is pressure lantern designed to give light, as much as possible for the less amount of fuel possible.

I think you must choose: accept the power of the lantern or go the led way.
Or choose the non or less pressure way of (alcohol) mantle lamps.

Choose a dimmable gas , not gasoline, lantern for cozy light. You till have the mantle flair at no flames.

What's wrong with a 639C? Coleman's adjustable brightness kerosene lantern?
    Very reliable.

    Exactly!
Actually I don't understand why people would use any lantern for cozy light, Petromax or not. Or indoors too for that, other than when using it as a work light.
Choose the correct lamp for each purpose.
Bright lanterns are generally working lights. Pressure lamps with opal shades are for indoor use, but even those aren't generally for "coziness".
Better then to do as Wim suggest, and use a wick fed mantle lamp.
Or a Tito Landi table lamp with an opal shade! Those are perfect for many things, and my go-to-lamp for most things that don't need an extremely bright illumination.
Just use a proper shade, mind you! Otherwise it's pointless... The shade make the whole difference, which is another reason why you can't get any coziness at all with a pure, naked lantern.

Thanks, clear. I have to accept bright light and no cozyness with my lanterns. Or just light a candle. The Tilley x246 Guardsman is arriving today! I will fettle it and let you know if the noise is less than my 829/350 CP.
