Hello chaps My mate Ross has his late grandfather's Coleman 249 Scout (made in Canada) which has a date stamp that is either an 8 45 or is B 45? I'm not entirely familiar with how Coleman Canada dated their lanterns and what month that B stamping represents. Yes, the lantern is 1945 Canada production, but that's about all we know regarding it's build date. According to Ross, his grandfather returned from WWII to New Zealand in February 1945, and purchased the lantern some time in 1945. The lantern still retains its original coleman canada documentation printed 1 45 and includes documentation on the Pyrex globe with a print date of 12 44. The lantern's fount and hood are both finished in original Seafoam colour. Any help with this will be gratefully appreciated Cheers Simon
@Simon Henderson Nice lantern to have with that history. The “B” will be either the second quarter or the second half of 1945. I’ll see if I can sort out which. Best regards Tony
Hi Tony. Thanks for that. Yes, it will be very interesting to find out it's build date as accurately as is possible. Cheers Simon
@Simon Henderson Earlier Canadian Coleman 249s are marked with letters up to D, so I’d be reckoning that the B is second quarter of 1945. Cheers Tony
Hi guys. Here's a few pic's of Ross's late grandfather's 249 Scout. I should've included these last night with my initial post.
A lovely example of 249 even with the original bulge globe which are a rarity now. These Scouts are excellent lantern, easy to get running and a very quiet hiss.
