Hi all, This is a rare American Arc type of lamp from around 1910, made by the Bolte & Weyer Co. Chicago. In a B&W catalogue from early1910,s you can find a similar lamp Nr. 25, but that lamp has an indoor type of vent. The B&W lamp Nr. 2-B has a burner unit like my lamp and also with the outdoor type of vent that also you can find on mine. So this is a No. 25 lamp with an outdoor type of vent. I have not seen any other B&W catalogue, so I don't know if this lamp was given any unique numbering. This is a gasoline fed lamp with a horizontal overhead coiled generator. It has an upright gas burner and uses an upright mantle. It was probably used in outdoor locations, but maybe also for commercial use in cafés, stores and work shops. The lamp was said to give a light output of 800CP. My lamp was pretty much complete and I just had to make a good cleaning and new washers. Very easy going light up and it gave a good light output already at 7 psi (0,5 Bar). Also a very silent lamp, just a faint hissing sound. /Conny before ....... That is something pretty special Conny. Thanks for sharing. Once thing that I have been pondering for a while now is why some of these are referred to as "arc" lamps - when an arc lamp by definition is basically an electric arc in a gas atmosphere. Was this just a marketing ploy ?
Thanks! @Fireexit1 Yes, I think they wanted to promote their lamps against the most powerful light source of that time - the electric Arc lamp! /Conny
It looks as if in this design the evaorated (hot) gas is lead through a tube inside the tank into the vertical upright burner. Doesn't this cause the tank to get hot and build up more pressure than wanted? Anyway an impressive lamp, as always with your items!
Nice to see another rare complete lantern restored. It is difficult to understand the size of these huge lanterns. They are much larger than the 1920's lanterns.
Never a dull posting from @Conny C ! Another rare, beautiful and what appears to be unmolested lamp. I’ve no idea how you keep finding these wonderful examples, thanks for sharing.
Congratulations on this masterfully restored lamp in good condition. Impressive and very interesting lamp. Thank you for sharing. Regards, Titoo.
