So I have obtained some different thicknesses of Viton sheets and have a range of hollow punches and have been successfully punching cap washers etc for different GPA's. I would like to make burner washers and Tilley vaporizer washers the same way but would like to know the best high temp gasket material to use. I am sure some members have been doing this and will be able to advise.
Viton is fine for Tilley vapouriser washers, but thickness becomes an issue for some control cocks that need to be clocked to a particular position. By burners, do you require washers as used on pressure stove burners? Tony
O.K. I see Viton washers on Ebay for the Tilley vaporizers washers but the originals are a thin non-viton material. I was concerned that Viton may not take the temp. and that is why they use something different? And yes I would also like to cut the first washers (just above the pre-heater cup) on Valor/Optimus style single burner stoves as well. This is some sort of non-asbestos hi temp. material which I would like to obtain in sheet form? Any suggestions?
Dunno, I just had a look on ebay and there it were .. lots of differing thicknesses and sizes of sheets You may also have a good local motor factor dealer type person who will also stock?? Or an engineering type of shop? Hope that helps Cheers here is the description on the listing..
Thanks for that. I have found that listing and looks like the style of gasket material would just right. Also available in many different thicknesses. Most appreciated, I think this stuff is a goer, I will at least give a try.
@David Cully There is a company in Melbourne (Australia) called Hy-Tec that makes stove washers, viton washers and a has whole range of these materials. I keep various viton and fibre washer material for making odd sized washers, but buy the vast majority of my stove and lamp washers from The Fettle Box (this site: here). One thing to note: cutting fibre washers and making the centre hole in not that easy if you don't have a double (concentric) punch set. The fibre sheet is easily cracked if the distance between the inner and outer diameters is small. Ensure you have very sharp, well maintained, hole punches. PS. Don't use silicone Cheers Tony
Thanks Tony, I have a Boehm twinnable handle/chuck and punches (which are really sharp) so that shouldn't be a problem. I just like the idea of being able to cut any size as required. You may have a similar problem in Tasmania but there isn't a great range of spares in New Zealand and the retailers that do stock them charge like wounded bulls.
David, I have used this High Temperature Gasket Material A4 300mm x 214mm x 1.5mm A4 SIZE 1/16 THICK | eBay
Thanks ROBBO55 I have just ordered 2x sheets of this as I think it is just what I was looking for, especially for the stove burner gaskets. I have ordered some 0.8mm hi-temp Viton (apparently not all Viton is the same formulation) so with this gasket material I think I am all set to punch away happily!
