Coleman Peak 1 222 F/A tube

    Here's a breakdown on the Coleman 222 backpack lantern fuel/air tube. Notice there is no f/a rod and the fuel pickup orifice it tiny. I believe this is the evolutionary step between the old f/a system and the newer plastic f/a assemblies. Fuel and air metering are dependent on total flow through the fuel valve.

    At start up, the total volume passing through the valve is relatively huge. The tiny hole in at the bottom of the fuel pickup can't keep up with this flow so air is thus forced down the outer tube where it atomizes the fuel. Once the generator is hot, back pressure from the generating gas slows the flow through the f/a tube and the tiny hole in the bottom can then keep up. When this happens the fuel rises in the outer tube flooding it and thus cutting the flow of air and only liquid is forced to the generator.

    I am in two minds with these lanterns. On the one hand they are delightful little lanterns that work well and give a good light. On the other hand the use of an O ring seal on the gland spindle is an 'orrible idea and I have had these leak fuel and start an interesting conflagration. So I think they are cute and I have several versions but I am not all that keen on actually lighting any of them. ::Neil::

    I agree Neil. Though I like this setup better than the easi lite with orings AND schrader valve. I replaced these orings since I had it apart. New viton should last a while. But, I've used them a lot, and they've been very reliable. Does anything still come with graphite packings?

    I'm not keen on them for the reason Neil gives, but also that piddling little tank doesn't hold much fuel and they seem to need pumping up every five minutes.

    I've two of them and they're going on eBay, where they seem to attract a decent price for what they are.

    Just my two penn'orth...

    You should be able to get them at a quality auto parts store.

    I want to thank the original posters of this. I had a Coleman 229 with a clogged pickup tube and this helped me immensely yesterday. If those souls have passed on then my success is a shining tribute to them.

    @bluepen61 try an O'REILLY auto parts. They have a red box of individual viton o-rings behind the counter that many of them don't even know about. Take your parts with you and try them on the parts for fit.
