Hello, Picked up a really nice looking 228f with coleman metal case. When i looked at it and pressurized it you can hear the fuel going into the generator with the valve off. Got it home and replaced the cap gasket took the generator out and cleaned it and out new fuel in it, and it does the same think. Pump it up and you can hear fuel going into the generator with the valve off and can light it. When you turn the valve on it makes a pop pop sound, and when you shut it off you have to close the tip cleaner. I the valve out and the tip of it looks good with out any ridges. thank you
Make sure there is no crud in the valve seat. Use some carburettor cleaner to flush it out. If it still allows fuel into the generator when the valve is closed do the following: Put a small amount of lapping paste on the pointed end of the spindle. BE CAREFUL not to put it on the threads. Screw the spindle shut, then unscrew it half a turn and then screw it back in. Repeat about 100 times. Then unscrew the shaft and flush out the valve seat to get all the lapping paste out. Retest under pressure for leakage. Cheers Tony
Tony's instructions about lapping the valve are good, but before you do try unscrewing the valve from the body slowly and carefully paying attention to the very end of the threads. Turn the valve stem 180 degrees and restart the threads. The stem is double threaded and sometimes engaging the threads in the opposite orientation can fix the issue.
On an older valve the stem tip and seat wear to each other. When you take one apart, for example to change the packing and put it back 180 out they sometimes leak. Putting it back so the wear pattern matches up sometimes (not often, but sometimes) helps. Also, as Tony said, check for a tiny bit of trash in the tip, that's the most usual cause, especially if the tip is in good shape and doesn't show signs of being over-tightened.
